Wordsmith AI Raises $14 Million to Expand In-House Legal AI Platform

Edinburgh-founded legal AI startup Wordsmith AI has secured an additional $14 million in a Series B extension, taking its total funding to $114 million.

The extension was led by Intact Private Capital, with participation from existing investors Highland Europe and Index Ventures, while FT Ventures joined as a new investor.

Helping Enterprises Reduce Legal Costs with AI

Founded in 2023 by Ross McNairn, Volodymyr Giginiak, and Robbie Falkenthal, Wordsmith AI develops AI agents that help corporate legal teams automate routine legal work while reducing reliance on external law firms.

The platform manages legal requests by:

  • Routing legal queries with business context

  • Resolving routine work using approved legal playbooks

  • Escalating complex matters to human lawyers

  • Maintaining compliance and audit trails throughout the workflow

Unlike many legal AI companies that primarily serve law firms, Wordsmith focuses on enterprise in-house legal departments, enabling organizations to handle more legal work internally.

Rapid Enterprise Growth

Wordsmith AI reports significant business momentum since its previous funding round.

According to the company:

  • Revenue has grown 14x year over year

  • The platform serves more than 500 enterprise customers

  • Customers include BT, Financial Times, Sage, Starling Bank, Canva, and Safelite

The company also states that several enterprise customers have reduced outside legal spending by seven figures after deploying the platform.

Funding to Support North American Expansion

The fresh capital will be used to:

  • Expand operations across North America

  • Accelerate enterprise customer acquisition

  • Strengthen offerings for financial services and insurance companies

  • Continue development of its enterprise legal AI platform
