Berlin-based logistics technology startup Conlio has raised €6.4 million in a funding round led by Piton Capital to automate freight documentation and verification using artificial intelligence.
The round also saw participation from WaVe-X, the venture arm of Austria's WALTER GROUP, F-LOG and Haufe Group Ventures. Existing investors System. One, Puzzle Ventures, Booom Ventures, Yellow, 2100 Ventures and Anamcara Capital also participated.
Founded in 2024 by Dr Claudio Consul, Conlio is developing an AI-powered platform that automates the verification of freight documents, helping logistics companies reduce manual processing, minimise errors and accelerate invoicing.
Turning freight paperwork into automated workflows
Freight forwarding involves large volumes of documents that need to be checked before carriers receive payments and shippers are invoiced.
These documents include CMR consignment notes, pallet notes, weighing slips and other transport records. They often arrive in different formats and languages, with handwritten notes and customer-specific requirements that make manual verification time-consuming.
Conlio was founded after Consul identified this problem during his time at digital freight forwarder sennder, where he served as senior vice president of product.
At sennder, he observed how large teams manually reviewed incoming freight documents before approving payments to subcontractors and issuing invoices to shippers.
After exploring the potential of large language models to automate this process, he founded Conlio in Berlin in 2024.
How Conlio's AI document verification works
Conlio's platform processes batches of freight documents and converts them into structured information linked to the relevant transport orders.
The system performs several steps:
Document separation: Splits multi-page batches into individual documents.
Document identification: Recognises document types, including CMRs, pallet notes and weighing slips.
Order matching: Connects documents to the correct transport order and delivery.
Content verification: Checks dates, quantities and other information against shipment requirements.
Exception detection: Identifies missing stamps or signatures, handwritten damage notes, short deliveries and other discrepancies.
One challenge is that a single CMR document can contain multiple dates relating to different stages of a shipment. Conlio's system checks these details against the relevant transport requirements rather than treating every date as interchangeable.
The platform is designed to work with different document formats, languages and customer-specific verification rules without requiring customers to train the models themselves.
Human oversight remains part of the process
Conlio uses a two-outcome verification process.
When documents match the transport order requirements, the system can close the order automatically. When it identifies a discrepancy, the case is flagged for human review.
Even flagged cases are already organised, labelled and matched to the relevant order, reducing the amount of manual work required from logistics teams.
Founder Claudio Consul describes human oversight as a core design principle. The company aims to minimise false positives, particularly because document verification can influence whether payments are released.
According to Conlio, its platform can automate more than 90% of freight document checks.
The company also claims that its technology can increase a freight forwarder's EBIT by up to 30%, alongside reducing overpayments and accelerating invoicing.
Targeting Europe's road freight market
Conlio works with mid-sized and large road freight forwarders in Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain and Denmark.
The opportunity is significant. Transport Intelligence estimates that the European road freight market was worth €440.4 billion in 2025 and forecasts growth to €483 billion by 2030.
Other startups are also developing AI solutions for logistics operations. These include Cargofy, which focuses on AI-powered freight dispatching, Opereit, which develops logistics agents, and Estonia-based MyDello, which competes in digital freight forwarding.
Conlio is targeting a different operational bottleneck: the paperwork and financial verification processes that sit between completing a shipment and settling the associated transactions.
Funding to support technology and European expansion
The €6.4 million funding will be directed towards technology development and hiring, with a particular focus on sales and regional expansion.
Piton Capital partner Michael Macklin said freight forwarding involves large volumes of transactions that still depend on manual checks. He sees an opportunity for Conlio to develop a platform with network effects as more participants and transactions enter the system.
Thomas Muscher, managing director at WaVe-X, highlighted the potential for AI to move beyond pilot projects into core freight forwarding operations, particularly in finance and back-office processes.
Conlio currently has a team of 10 employees. The company has not disclosed its valuation or specific hiring targets.
What comes next for Conlio?
Conlio is positioning itself to become a European technology provider for freight document verification and financial workflows.
Its next stage will depend on expanding its customer base, building regional sales operations and establishing trust in AI-assisted payment verification.
The participation of investors connected to the freight and logistics industry also adds strategic relevance to the round. However, the announcement does not establish whether WALTER GROUP and FIEGE are customers, investors or both.
With its €6.4 million funding round, Conlio is looking to reduce the administrative burden of freight forwarding and bring AI-powered verification into everyday logistics operations.
