Bengaluru-based biotechnology startup Venomics AI has raised $2.7 million in a pre-seed funding round to develop its AI-powered drug discovery platform focused on venom-derived molecules.

The round was co-led by Speciale Invest and South Park Commons, with participation from Operators Studio. This marks the company's first institutional funding round.

Venomics AI plans to use the capital to expand operations, grow its molecular dataset, and strengthen its artificial intelligence and laboratory screening capabilities.

Building a Drug Discovery Platform Around Venom Biology

Founded in May 2026, Venomics AI was spun out of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and co-founded by Sunagar and Vinay Prabhu.

The company combines venom biology, molecular sequencing, artificial intelligence, and experimental screening to identify and develop potential therapeutic candidates derived from venom.

Its central initiative is the Venom Atlas, a platform designed to connect venom-derived molecular data with laboratory validation and drug discovery.

The platform uses AI to prioritise promising molecular candidates. These predictions are then tested through functional laboratory screening. The resulting experimental data is fed back into subsequent predictions and molecular design, creating an iterative discovery process.

This approach aims to connect computational predictions with experimental evidence rather than relying on AI-generated candidate molecules alone.

Why Venom-Derived Molecules Matter

Animal venoms contain bioactive peptides and proteins that researchers are exploring for potential therapeutic applications.

Molecules found in snake, scorpion, and marine animal venoms are being studied for their possible relevance to pain management, neurological disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and other medical applications.

Venomics AI aims to use India's venom biodiversity alongside its scientific and computational capabilities to develop a drug discovery platform for global therapeutic development.

The company is operating in an emerging area where biological research, computational tools, and laboratory experimentation intersect.

Early Progress and Platform Development

Venomics AI has established the initial architecture of its platform and joined the NVIDIA Inception programme.

It was also selected as one of the top five finalists for the 2026 Indo-Boston Biotech Bridge Award.

The company plans to build a multidisciplinary team spanning venom biology, computational science, and drug discovery. Its immediate focus includes validating and optimising promising molecules while expanding the underlying molecular dataset and screening capabilities.

These activities are intended to strengthen the connection between its AI predictions and laboratory results.

India's Growing AI-Driven Drug Discovery Ecosystem

Venomics AI is entering a market where biotechnology companies are increasingly exploring AI-led approaches to molecular discovery and experimental validation.

One company operating in a related area is Bengaluru-based Peptris Technologies, which raised Rs 70 crore in a Series A round in February 2026. The company uses AI-driven molecular discovery and experimental validation to advance potential drug candidates.

Another specialised player is Snaayu Lifesciences, incubated at C-CAMP, which is working on isolating and characterising novel analgesic compounds from cone snail venom.

Venomics AI's focus on venom-derived molecules gives it a distinct research direction within this broader ecosystem.

What Comes Next for Venomics AI?

With its first institutional funding secured, Venomics AI plans to expand its operations, strengthen its AI and laboratory screening infrastructure, and grow its molecular dataset.

The company also intends to recruit specialists across venom biology, computational science, and drug discovery to support the development and validation of potential therapeutic leads.

Its longer-term ambition is to build a platform that uses India's biological diversity and research capabilities to contribute to global therapeutic development. The success of this approach will depend on its ability to validate promising molecules through experimental research and advance them towards viable drug candidates.
