Smack Technologies Raises $61 Million Series B to Accelerate Military AI Decision-Making

Austin-based defense technology startup Smack Technologies has raised $61 million in Series B funding to scale its AI-powered decision-making and autonomous systems for military operations.

The round is backed by Costanoa Ventures, First In, Point72 Ventures and Geodesic Capital.

The funding comes as defense organizations increasingly seek software capable of helping military units operate faster in environments where communications can be disrupted or heavily jammed.

AI-Powered Battlefield Decision Support

Smack's primary platform, Omega, is designed to help military units process battlefield information and develop tactical targeting options more quickly.

The platform combines reinforcement learning and real-time computer vision to evaluate battlefield variables and generate decision options.

When battlefield conditions change or communications are disrupted, Omega can recalculate plans and adapt to new conditions.

The goal is to reduce the amount of manual work required from military staff while allowing commanders to respond more quickly to changing conditions.

Building Alpha Hardware

Smack is also developing Alpha, a lightweight forearm-mounted display designed to provide tactical commanders with real-time situational awareness.

The company plans to build between 10 and 20 Alpha prototypes over the next six months.

Growing Defense Contracts

Smack is working with the Joint Fires Network and the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab.

The company also secured two seven-figure prototyping contracts in July as demand for independent defense technology suppliers increases.

The startup has expanded its workforce from 19 employees in April to 51 employees and plans to reach approximately 85 employees by the end of 2026.

Human Decision-Making Remains Central

The development of AI systems for military decision-making also raises questions about the role of humans in increasingly automated operations.

Smack says human operators remain directly involved in final decisions, with its systems designed to provide recommendations and accelerate analysis rather than independently make final command decisions.

The $61 million Series B will support Smack's continued product development, workforce expansion and deployment of its AI decision-making and tactical systems.
