Cloudflare Launches Kitesurf - Browser for AI Agents

Cloudflare has introduced Kitesurf, a cloud-hosted browser designed for AI agents rather than human users.

The launch comes as AI software moves beyond chatbots and starts handling tasks on behalf of users. These tasks can include browsing websites, filling out forms, extracting information, and completing online workflows.

For such systems, a traditional browser can include many features that agents do not need. Kitesurf instead focuses on the functions required for automated web interaction.

Why AI Agents Need Different Browsers

Traditional browsers are built around the needs of human users. They support features such as tabs, extensions, themes, and visual interfaces.

AI agents have different requirements. They need to process web pages, interact with websites, and complete tasks while managing computing resources and context.

Cloudflare said Kitesurf is designed around these needs. The browser focuses on factors such as performance, context windows, token usage, and scalability.

Security also presents a different challenge. AI agents can face risks such as prompt injection attacks when they interact with web content.

Kitesurf Lets Developers Automate Web Tasks

Kitesurf is aimed at developers building AI agents that need to work with websites.

Instead of creating and maintaining a browser environment, developers can use Kitesurf to handle browser-based tasks. These include navigating pages, filling out forms, extracting HTML, and taking screenshots.

The browser is available through Cloudflare's Browser Run service. It is currently offered free during the beta period.

Browser Run allows developers to programmatically control headless browser instances running on Cloudflare's network. Cloudflare has been expanding the service as AI agents take on more web-based tasks.

Cloudflare Built Kitesurf on Workers

Cloudflare said it developed Kitesurf in about 12 weeks.

The browser runs on Cloudflare Workers, the company's serverless application platform. Its architecture combines several open-source and modular technologies.

These include the Blitz rendering engine, Firefox's Stylo CSS parser, and the Boa JavaScript engine, which is written in Rust.

Cloudflare also said an early Kitesurf proof of concept was based on Obscura, an open-source Rust headless browser engine.

The company said Kitesurf currently passes more than 215,000 web platform tests. It also continues to add and pass additional tests as development progresses.

Lower Resource Use Is a Key Focus

Cloudflare's main argument for Kitesurf is efficiency.

Traditional Chromium-based browsers support a wide range of features for human users. An AI agent does not need many of those visual or interface features.

Kitesurf removes some of that overhead and focuses on the browser functions agents use most often.

According to Cloudflare, the browser uses less CPU and memory than Chromium for common agent tasks. These include taking screenshots and extracting HTML.

Lower resource use could also reduce the computing cost of running browser-based AI agents at scale.

Kitesurf Still Needs Broader Web Compatibility

The browser remains an early-stage product. However, Cloudflare said it can already render several commonly used websites and web applications.

These include TodoMVC, Wikipedia, Hacker News, the Cloudflare Blog, and parts of the Cloudflare dashboard.

The company plans to continue expanding web platform test coverage as Kitesurf develops.

For developers, the broader goal is to make browser automation easier to deploy at scale. This could become increasingly relevant as more AI agents move from answering questions to performing actions on the web.

The Shift Toward Agent-Based Web Use

Kitesurf is part of Cloudflare's broader focus on infrastructure for AI agents.

The company has also expanded Browser Run with features such as live browser sessions, session recordings, human intervention, and support for browser-control protocols.

Cloudflare has also argued that the web needs to adapt as AI agents become more active online. Its Agent Readiness initiative, for example, focuses on how websites can make their content and functions easier for agents to access.

Kitesurf takes the infrastructure approach from the browser side. Instead of changing websites first, it provides developers with a browser environment designed around automated web use.

The product is still in beta, so its long-term role in the AI browser market remains to be seen. For now, Cloudflare is positioning Kitesurf as a lightweight browser layer for developers building software that can act on the web.
