Japan-based semiconductor company Rapidus has secured an additional $943 million in funding as it continues efforts to build advanced chip manufacturing capabilities.

The latest investment follows earlier financial support received this year. Rapidus previously announced a $624 million investment from Japan's Information-technology Promotion Agency (IPA), along with private-sector backing from 32 companies. Those investors included Canon, Development Bank of Japan, Fujitsu, NTT, SoftBank, and Sony Group.

With the new funding, the company's total capital raised has exceeded $1.72 billion. Following the latest contribution from the IPA, overall funding for Rapidus has reached approximately $2.65 billion.

Funding to Support Expansion and Technology Development

Rapidus plans to use the capital to expand its operations and accelerate semiconductor development activities.

The company is focused on commercializing 2-nanometer (2nm) logic semiconductors. These chips use Gate-All-Around (GAA) transistor technology, which is designed to improve processing performance while reducing power consumption.

As global demand for advanced semiconductors grows, manufacturers are increasing investments in next-generation chip technologies. Rapidus aims to strengthen its position in this segment through continued research and production development.

Focus on Custom Chip Manufacturing

In addition to semiconductor production, Rapidus offers a platform called Rapid and Unified Manufacturing Service (RUMS). The service helps external customers design and manufacture custom chips.

A key part of the company's strategy is reducing the time required to move from chip design to final production. This approach aims to help customers bring semiconductor products to market more efficiently.

Rapidus also integrates front-end and back-end manufacturing processes. The company handles circuit fabrication on silicon wafers as well as chip packaging and assembly. This includes support for chiplet-based designs, which combine multiple smaller chips into a single package.

Target Markets

Rapidus develops semiconductor solutions for several technology-driven industries. These include:

  • Artificial intelligence and data centers

  • High-performance computing

  • Autonomous driving systems

  • Robotics

  • 5G and emerging 6G communication technologies

The latest funding is expected to support the company's long-term objective of establishing advanced semiconductor manufacturing capabilities in Japan while expanding its presence in the global chip industry.
