Breedr Raises $27M to Digitise the Global Beef Supply Chain

Breedr, a livestock technology platform that gives cattle digital records from birth through to the supermarket shelf, has raised $27 million in Series B funding led by Partech’s impact fund.

The round also included Latitude and LocalGlobe’s growth-stage fund, along with Outsiders Fund. The latest funding brings Breedr’s total capital raised to $46.6 million.

Tracking More Than Two Million Cattle

Breedr currently tracks more than two million head of cattle and expects almost $500 million worth of livestock to be traded through its marketplace this year.

Founded in 2018 by Ian Wheal, the company is now headquartered in Texas and operates across the United States, the UK and Australia, while expanding into New Zealand.

Creating a Digital Record for Every Animal

Breedr was created to replace paper-based livestock records with a digital system that tracks each animal’s weight, health and ancestry throughout its life.

Farmers and ranchers can use these verified records when trading cattle through Breedr’s marketplace, where the company generally charges lower fees than traditional livestock auctions.

The company earns revenue through a transaction-based model, collecting a fee when livestock is sold rather than charging producers a recurring software subscription.

Using AI to Improve Livestock Value

Breedr also provides financing for cattle while they are still being raised and uses an AI model to determine the optimal time to sell.

According to the company, its approach can help cattle reach market weight up to five months earlier, add more than $500 in value per animal, and reduce methane emissions by approximately 20% to 30% by shortening the finishing period.

Expanding Across Global Beef Markets

The latest funding comes as cattle producers face a shrinking US herd alongside continued demand for beef. Breedr believes better data and digital infrastructure can help producers extract more value from every animal.

The company plans to use the new capital to expand its teams in the US, Australia and New Zealand and improve the data collected for each animal, including genomic information.

Breedr’s longer-term ambition is to build connected digital supply chains where every animal can be tracked through its lifecycle and producers can capture more value from the quality they produce.
