Senior Keeper - Birds, Invertebrates and Herptiles
Twycross Zoo is seeking a Senior Keeper to support the growing birds, invertebrates and herptiles section. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to high animal welfare standards, conservation, research, education, and the development of new facilities and species at the zoo.
Key Responsibilities:
Support the Curator and Team Leader in maintaining excellent standards of animal welfare, husbandry, and presentation across birds, herptiles, and invertebrates.
Supervise and support keeping staff, promoting a positive, engaged, and solution-focused team culture.
Assess daily operations and recommend improvements to the Curator and Team Leader.
Act as the section's point of contact across the zoo when the Curator or Team Leader is absent.
Take a leading role in animal emergencies when required.
Support the implementation of zoo policies, procedures, and protocols.
Train new and existing keepers in relevant animal care and operational tasks.
Ensure accurate animal records and effective communication of information across the organisation.
Support research, conservation education, animal services, veterinary, and maintenance activities.
Proactively identify opportunities for zoo-based research and conservation initiatives.
Work closely with veterinary and maintenance teams to address animal health and welfare needs.
Support departmental projects and ensure work is completed to agreed deadlines.
Potentially join the firearms and recapture team, subject to suitability and training.
Qualifications and Experience:
BSc or equivalent experience in an animal, zoological, conservation, or related subject.
DMZAA or equivalent qualification desirable.
Extensive specialist knowledge of modern husbandry practices for a wide range of herptiles and invertebrates, with significant avian keeping experience preferred; or extensive specialist knowledge of avian husbandry with significant herptile and invertebrate experience preferred.
Current knowledge of best-practice animal management and welfare standards.
Experience supervising staff or volunteers.
Ability to support and work effectively with people using a calm and flexible approach.
Excellent organisation and time-management skills with the ability to prioritise effectively.
Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office and ZIMS.
Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
Flexibility regarding working hours and duties.
Physically able to undertake the required section work.
Working Pattern:
The role averages 37.5 hours per week, working 5 days out of 7 on a set pattern. Flexibility in working times and duties is required.
