Project Assistant
Bristol Avon Rivers Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Project Assistant to support river restoration, nature recovery, water quality, natural flood management, fisheries, land management, community engagement, education, and citizen science projects across the Bristol Avon catchment.
Key Responsibilities:
Carry out catchment and river surveys, including ecological, water quality, fisheries, habitat, and Natural Flood Management surveys.
Support practical river and habitat restoration and nature recovery projects.
Work with landowners, farmers, volunteers, schools, community groups, and partner organisations.
Organise and deliver community activities, workshops, events, river cleans, and educational activities.
Support citizen science, volunteer recruitment, mentoring, and engagement.
Assist with land management and environmental projects.
Create maps, survey materials, and project resources using GIS and mapping tools.
Conduct desktop research and contribute to project reports and documentation.
Help identify funding opportunities and prepare applications for smaller projects.
Provide project and administrative support to senior team members.
Represent Bristol Avon Rivers Trust positively with partners, communities, and the public.
Take increasing responsibility for project activities as skills and experience develop.
Follow health, safety, environmental, and organisational procedures.
Qualifications and Experience:
Degree or equivalent professional experience in a relevant field such as river restoration, freshwater ecology, hydrology, environmental science, or the wider water sector.
Genuine interest in nature conservation and understanding of the environmental challenges facing rivers.
Experience or interest in environmental fieldwork and conducting walkover surveys.
Experience using GIS or other mapping tools.
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work confidently with landowners, volunteers, schools, community groups, and partner organisations.
Strong organisational and time-management skills.
Ability to work independently, use initiative, and solve problems.
Ability to organise and lead project activities, surveys, or group events.
Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Understanding of health and safety requirements.
Ability to manage small budgets and demonstrate value for money.
Willingness to undertake relevant training and develop new skills.
Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle with appropriate business insurance.
Desirable:
Knowledge of the Bristol Avon catchment.
Experience with environmental, habitat, water quality, fisheries, or land management surveys.
Experience organising or managing volunteers or community groups.
Experience working within a charity, public sector, or voluntary organisation.
