Assistant Staff Veterinarian - The Florida Aquarium
The Florida Aquarium is seeking an Assistant Staff Veterinarian to support veterinary services for its living animal collection, offsite satellite exhibits, corals, and rehabilitating sea turtles at the Center for Conservation in Apollo Beach, Florida. The role includes preventative and emergency care, diagnostics, pathology, conservation support, and clinical research. Flexibility, creativity, teamwork, and strong communication skills are essential.
Key Responsibilities
Assist Staff Veterinarians with preventative medicine programs, including examinations, disease screening, parasite surveillance, immunizations, birth control, nutrition, and dental care.
Build positive working relationships between Animal Health, Animal Care, and the Center for Conservation teams.
Communicate animal health evaluations, test results, treatment plans, prognoses, and follow-up needs clearly and promptly.
Respond to animal emergencies and examine sick or injured animals.
Perform or assist with surgery, radiography, diagnostics, and treatments as needed.
Implement quarantine, pre-shipment testing, and other animal health protocols.
Perform necropsies and pathology assessments for collection mortalities.
Communicate animal welfare and health concerns to Animal Care and Health leadership.
Maintain accurate medical records in Tracks software.
Conduct animal health rounds and coordinate case management with animal care teams.
Share on-call and overnight responsibilities with Staff Veterinarians.
Support clinical research, conservation programs, and research initiatives.
Participate annually in a Conservation Day of Action shift.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Qualifications
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) or Veterinary Medical Doctor (V.M.D.) degree required.
Florida veterinary license required or ability to obtain within one year.
At least two years of exotic animal medicine experience in a zoo, aquarium, or related setting.
Knowledge of avian, ichthyological, and herpetological medicine.
USDA license preferred.
Experience with Tracks software preferred.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Scheduler, and Mail.

Ability to work around machinery and in changing temperatures and humidity.
Exposure to dust, fumes, gases, plants, birds, wild animals, and potential bites, stings, and scrapes.
Ability to use computers and view screens for extended periods.
Ability to conduct field work involving animal collections and research.
Ability to travel locally, nationally, and by air as needed.
Availability to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and on-call emergency shifts.
Ability to work directly with a diverse living collection of animals in the Central Florida climate.
