The role also involves working with private landowners, sportsmen, and other agencies, and maintaining equipment and facilities.
Senior Wildlife Technician - Habitat
The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking a Senior Wildlife Technician - Habitat to support wildlife habitat programs at the Boise River Wildlife Management Area in Boise. The position works closely with regional wildlife habitat staff to implement habitat management, restoration, monitoring, maintenance, and public engagement programs.
Key Responsibilities:
Implement habitat management and restoration activities, including seeding, planting, food plots, and noxious weed control.
Conduct wildlife, habitat, vegetation, and population surveys and collect, record, analyze, and manage biological data.
Assist with aerial surveys, hunter check stations, harvest data collection, hunter opinion surveys, and wildlife radio-monitoring.
Use GIS to map wildlife locations and habitats and perform basic spatial analysis.
Supervise seasonal staff and assist with planning and directing field activities.
Manage volunteer, grazing, visitor use, and habitat programs.
Work with private landowners, sportsmen and women, nonprofits, and state and federal agencies.
Serve as an IDFG liaison and provide information to the public regarding wildlife and habitat management programs.
Assist with reports, budgets, databases, and administrative activities.
Maintain fences, roads, dikes, buildings, grounds, signs, and other facilities.
Operate and maintain tractors, ATVs, boats, 4WD vehicles, OHVs, chainsaws, power tools, and other equipment.
Assist with enforcement of Fish and Game rules and regulations.
Work in challenging terrain and weather conditions, including long workdays, overnight stays, and occasional weekends.
Qualifications:
Knowledge of wildlife ecology, habitat requirements, and habitat management practices.
Typically, an associate degree in a wildlife-related field plus one year of habitat or wildlife work experience, or a bachelor’s degree in a wildlife-related field with no additional experience required.
Knowledge or experience with habitat development, restoration, and maintenance.
Experience recording, summarizing, and analyzing wildlife or biological data.
College-level coursework or experience in mathematics, biology, computers, or GIS.
Ability to use GIS and electronic databases for wildlife and habitat data management.
Ability to safely operate and maintain vehicles, OHVs, farm equipment, heavy equipment, hand tools, and power tools.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working with the public, landowners, agencies, and partner organizations.
Valid driver’s license required.
Work Environment:
This position involves significant outdoor fieldwork and may require hiking and working in adverse terrain and weather conditions. Employees must be able to safely perform physical field activities, operate equipment, and work extended hours when required.
