ORiS Secures €5 Million to Develop Space-Based Power Beaming

Italian space technology startup ORiS has raised €5 million (approximately $5.7 million) to accelerate the development of its laser-based wireless power transmission technology for satellites.

The funding includes a €4.5 million pre-seed round led by Earlybird and co-led by Pitchdrive, with participation from Galaxia, Vento, and Piemonte Next Fund. The company also received a €500,000 grant through an Italian regional startup program.

Developing Laser Power Transmission for Space

Headquartered in Turin, Italy, ORiS is building technology that enables satellites to transfer power to one another using lasers. The system is designed to transmit energy directly to existing satellite solar arrays without requiring hardware modifications.

The company has already demonstrated the technology on Earth by wirelessly powering drones using laser transmission over a distance of 100 meters.

Funding to Support Space Demonstrations

ORiS said the new funding will support its first in-orbit technology demonstrations scheduled for 2027.

The company plans to conduct an initial mission with Dcubed to demonstrate laser power transmission over a distance of 10 meters, followed by a second demonstration mission with another commercial partner.

Expanding Space Energy Infrastructure

Beyond satellite applications, ORiS is also developing LOONA, a terrestrial wireless power transmission system that has received support from NATO's Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA).

The company believes its laser power-beaming technology could eventually support future satellite networks and long-duration lunar exploration missions.
