CuspAI Secures $450 Million to Advance AI-Powered Materials Science
U.K.-based AI materials science startup CuspAI has raised $450 million in Series B funding, valuing the company at $2.6 billion. The round was led by Kleiner Perkins and NEA, with a significant investment from Bezos Expeditions.
Founded by Chad Edwards and Max Welling, CuspAI develops AI technologies that accelerate the discovery of new materials for industries including semiconductors, energy, and advanced manufacturing.
Using AI to Speed Up Materials Discovery
CuspAI's flagship AI platform, MIRA, helps researchers identify promising material candidates significantly faster than traditional methods. The platform combines the open-source UMA models with CuspAI's proprietary kUPS technology to simulate materials at both atomic and molecular levels.
According to the company, MIRA can reduce research timelines from years to approximately six months.
Launching the AI Materials Foundry
Alongside the funding announcement, CuspAI launched the AI Materials Foundry, a research consortium with more than 45 industry members, including Nvidia, Samsung, and Meta.
The company plans to use the new capital to expand its international operations and accelerate the development of AI-powered materials discovery for commercial applications.
