Birdsview Raises €3.7M to Give Engineers “X-Ray Vision” Through Concrete
Norwegian construction technology startup Birdsview has raised €3.7 million in funding to scale its technology for inspecting concrete structures without drilling or damaging them.
The Bergen-based company uses sensors, ground-penetrating radar, LiDAR and AI to create 3D models of concrete structures, helping engineers identify rebar, thickness, cracks, voids and corrosion.
The funding round was led by Sarsia, with Butterfly Ventures, Proptechfonden, Kiilto Ventures, Nordic Makers and Momentum also participating. Existing investors Eviny Ventures and Farvatn Venture also joined the round.
Founded by CEO Olav Skogen and Simen Husøy, Birdsview began by tackling a different infrastructure problem: detecting internal rot in wooden utility poles. The founders later applied the same sensing technology to concrete inspection.
Seeing Inside Concrete Without Drilling
Most concrete infrastructure was not designed with an easy way to inspect its internal condition.
Birdsview aims to change that by combining ground-penetrating radar and LiDAR with its own algorithms to create detailed 3D models.
The technology can reveal the position of reinforcement, concrete thickness, cracks, voids and corrosion without requiring engineers to drill into the structure.
The resulting data can also be used directly in digital building models, giving engineers a ready-to-use file instead of requiring them to manually transfer information from an inspection report.
From Utility Poles to Buildings and Bridges
Birdsview was founded in Trondheim while Skogen and Husøy were engineering students at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
The company initially developed sensors to identify wooden utility poles that were deteriorating internally. One of Norway's largest grid operators began using the technology before Birdsview expanded into concrete.
The company launched its first concrete product in January 2025 and now operates from Bergen and Oslo with around 14 employees.
Birdsview says it has scanned more than 100 structures, including buildings and bridges.
Since beginning direct pre-sales in March 2026, customers in nine countries have signed up within weeks.
Saving Time and Avoiding Destructive Work
Birdsview's technology is already being used in practical construction projects.
In one example, a contractor in Bergen used the platform to map reinforcement beneath a building basement without tearing up the floor.
The company says the project saved approximately NOK 200,000 and two weeks of work.
Birdsview's customer base includes Vinci, Bouygues Construction, EllisDon, Sweco, Asplan Viak and Rambøll.
A Different Approach to Sustainable Construction
Birdsview is targeting a different part of the concrete industry than companies developing lower-carbon cement or new concrete materials.
Rather than changing how concrete is produced, the startup wants to help engineers better understand and maintain structures that already exist.
That could become increasingly important as construction companies and infrastructure owners look for ways to extend the lifespan of buildings and bridges.
Producing new concrete has a significant environmental footprint, meaning that keeping existing structures in service for longer can reduce the need for replacement construction.
Scaling Across International Markets
The €3.7 million funding will support Birdsview's commercial, industrial and international expansion.
The company is betting that its combination of sensing technology, AI and 3D modelling can replace more traditional inspection methods and make structural assessments faster, less disruptive and easier to integrate into modern engineering workflows.
With customers already using the product across nine countries, Birdsview is now focused on turning early international demand into a larger infrastructure inspection business.
