Role overview

Summary

This role is for an Engineering Manager in Operations Technology at HelloFresh, leading a team of mid-to-senior engineers within the Logistics Tribe. The manager will be responsible for people leadership, technical delivery, and shaping the team's project-based workflow, while also contributing hands-on code. The position requires experience in backend engineering, agile methodologies, and a product-oriented mindset.

At HelloFresh, our mission is simple: to change the way people eat, forever. As a global digital-native FMCG company and the world's leading mealkit provider, we are transforming the traditional food supply chain through a data-driven, on-demand model that enables scalable and more sustainable food delivery. The HelloFresh Group includes eight brands serving customers across multiple meal occasions, including HelloFresh, Green Chef, EveryPlate, and Chefs Plate, as well as ready-to-eat meals from Factor and YouFoodz, meat and seafood subscriptions through Good Chop, and pet nutrition with The Pets Table. Through technology, data, and culinary innovation, we deliver personalized food experiences to millions of households worldwide.

About the role: What's in the Box

The Logistics Tribe builds the systems powering end-to-end delivery across North America, Europe and Australia/New Zealand: getting fresh ingredients into our facilities, giving customers the best delivery options the network can support, and tracking every box to the customer's door. Today it is a single engineering team - two staff engineers, a data engineer and seven mid-to-senior engineers - led by the Director of Engineering, owning that software and keeping it running in production. You will join as an Engineering Manager and take line management of the seven.

The work is operations-heavy and business-critical, spread across different subdomains. You won't own a fixed backlog in one corner of the domain; the team's scope follows where the business pressure is. That is reflected in how we work: rather than one fixed squad, the team organises into small, project-focused pods that form and dissolve as projects start and finish. In a typical sprint, your engineers might be spread across three projects with three different product managers.

Strategy and technical direction are things we shape together - staff engineers, product managers and you all contributing, nobody working from a script handed down. You own the people and the delivery of your engineers.

The role reports to the Director of Engineering for Logistics Tech; your team is spread across two geographies.

What you'll do: The Recipe

  • Lead and grow a team of mid-to-senior engineers: set clear expectations, give regular and honest feedback, and own their development - including building the case when someone is ready for the next level.

  • Own the people and stay technical. This role carries real hands-on expectations - you still deliver code yourself, not management at a distance.

  • Keep raising the team's AI bar: role-model it in your own work, and push the workflows where AI genuinely changes how fast we deliver.

  • Make our project-based way of working work for people. You lead project staffing with the Director of Engineering and the product managers, putting engineers where the work and their growth both fit. You limit how many projects anyone carries, and you keep handovers clean so nobody becomes a single point of failure.

  • Own the delivery health of your team's work together with the product managers and the engineers leading each project: realistic plans, sound quality, and systems that stay reliable once shipped.

  • Hire and onboard well - you'll be building the team's balance of skills as projects and domains shift under you.

  • Champion the engineering practices we care about: behaviour-driven tests for every business use case, and small iterations.

  • Help shape tribe culture as part of the leadership team, in a setup that is deliberately flat and collaborative.

What you'll bring: The Ingredients

  • At least 2 years leading mid-to-senior engineers in an agile environment, backed by 6+ years of total engineering experience - you've run development and growth conversations and seen people through to promotion.

  • Comfort leading people through changing project boundaries - this is a team that reforms around projects, not one that sits still.

  • A backend-leaning technical grounding - event-driven microservices, Kubernetes, Kafka, relational databases, CI/CD - with real BDD/TDD habits that make large refactorings safe. You don't need to be the deepest engineer in the room, but you need to earn the team's respect.

  • Daily, practical experience building with AI tooling: you've shipped real work with it, you know where it fails, and you learn as readily from others as they learn from you.

  • A product-oriented mindset: you can reason about the business problem, prioritise for customer impact, and push back on low-value scope.

  • Genuine interest in physical-world and supply-chain problems. You want to understand how the operation actually works; logistics or carrier integration experience is a plus.

Above all, we are looking for individuals who will make HelloFresh better. We believe there are many different ways of developing skills and we love diverse experiences! So even if you don't
