Soctera Raises $4 Million in Seed Funding

Ithaca, New York-based Soctera has raised $4 million in seed funding to develop thermally optimized III-nitride millimeter-wave power amplifiers.

The round was backed by Anorak Ventures and Multiball Capital, with additional participation from 9Yards Capital, Mana Ventures, and Red Bear Ventures.

The company plans to use the funding to advance its power amplifier technology, scale its team, and expand manufacturing.

Thermally Optimized Power Amplifiers

Soctera is developing semiconductor technology designed to address heat-related limitations in wireless power amplifiers.

The company says its approach targets thermal constraints at the semiconductor level, with the goal of enabling longer-range detection and communication, clearer signals, and more durable hardware.

Its technology focuses on co-optimizing the semiconductor stack electrically and thermally.

According to co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Reet Chaudhuri, the approach reduces gallium nitride (GaN) content in each device by 20x and halves thermal resistance.

The company is now working to translate this materials-level advantage into qualified power amplifiers.

Applications in Radar and Satellite Systems

Soctera is targeting applications where high-performance signal transmission and detection are critical, including next-generation radar and satellite systems.

The company says increasing performance requirements for modern wireless systems are making thermal management a fundamental constraint on range and signal quality.

Funding to Scale Technology and Manufacturing

The new $4 million seed round will support Soctera's technology development, team expansion, and manufacturing scale-up.

The company is focused on moving its technology toward qualified power amplifier products for customers developing advanced radar, communications, and satellite systems.

Cornell University Spinout

Soctera was spun out of Cornell University's Jena-Xing group, a research laboratory focused on wide bandgap electronics.

Before its seed round, the company had secured more than $4.2 million in non-dilutive grant funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation, U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, and CHIPS Act programs to develop and demonstrate its core technology.

Leadership

Soctera was co-founded by CEO Austin Hickman and Chief Technology Officer Reet Chaudhuri.

The company is developing semiconductor-based power amplifier technology aimed at improving the reach, thermal performance, and reliability of wireless systems used in defense, space, and communications applications.
