Discovered Materials Secures $9 Million Seed Funding
Discovered Materials, a startup focused on AI-driven materials discovery for semiconductors, has raised $9 million in seed funding led by Lightspeed India Partners.
The round follows the company's emergence from Y Combinator and includes participation from Peak XV Partners and angel investors Paul Graham, Gokul Rajaram, and Thariq Shihipar.
Founded by Advaith Sridhar and Akash Ramdas, Discovered Materials is developing a software pipeline that uses AI agents to identify potential new materials for more efficient integrated circuits. The system combines AI models with physics-based simulations to evaluate candidate materials.
The company says its agents can explore thousands of material candidates per day, compared with the much smaller number of possibilities researchers could evaluate manually. It has also released hundreds of material candidates and its Material Discovery Bench for evaluating how AI models approach materials research.
Discovered Materials is focused particularly on the thermal challenges created by AI chips and data centers. The company aims to identify materials that could reduce heat generation or improve heat dissipation while maintaining the electrical and manufacturing properties required for semiconductor applications.
The startup plans to pursue patents for promising materials and their use in GPUs or semiconductor manufacturing processes, with the goal of licensing the resulting technology to chipmakers.
