Role overview
Summary
As a Composite CAD Design Engineer, you will drive the design, modeling, and integration of composite parts and assemblies for spacecraft, ensuring optimal performance and manufacturability. You will be a key contributor to the vehicle’s composite architecture, collaborating with various engineering teams from concept to industrialization.
Composite CAD Design Engineer – The Exploration Company
Mission: Developing & operating Nyx, a modular, reusable orbital spacecraft
About the Role
At The Exploration Company, we are building spacecraft for humanity. We are seeking a talented Composite CAD Design Engineer to drive the design, modeling, and maturation of advanced composite structures and integrated metallic assemblies for the Nyx orbital vehicle—from initial concept through industrialization and qualification.
Key Responsibilities
1. CAD Modeling & Layup Definition
• Model composite structures and sub-systems using Siemens NX, defining plies, core details, and laminate sequences.
• Generate detailed ply books, flat patterns, and engineering production drawings.
• Support the 3D modeling and integration of interfacing metallic structural components.
2. Design for Manufacturing (DfM) & Material Selection
• Collaborate with manufacturing engineers and suppliers to ensure parts are producible, cost-effective, and meet tight aerospace tolerances.
• Select appropriate composite materials (CFRP, sandwich panels, pre-pregs, RTM) tailored to thermal and structural mission loads.
3. Cross-Functional Engineering & Analysis
• Work closely with structural and thermal analysts to iterate CAD models based on FEA results, trade studies, and physical test data.
• Engage with propulsion, avionics, GNC, and system teams during co-engineering sessions to ensure seamless vehicle-level integration.
• Maintain strict configuration control, track sub-assembly mass budgets, and actively support design reviews and qualification testing.
Qualifications & Requirements
Must-Haves:
• Education: Master’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Manufacturing Engineering.
• Experience: 3+ years in composite design for aerospace or high-performance sectors.
• Technical CAD: Strong proficiency with Siemens NX (experience with Fibersim or equivalent composite modules is highly valued).
• Materials & Processes: Solid grasp of laminate theory, failure criteria, and composite fabrication methods (RTM, autoclave/pre-preg, sandwich panel construction).
• Metallic Design: Working knowledge of aerospace metallic parts, materials, and conventional manufacturing processes.
• Soft Skills: Excellent problem-solving, task prioritization, and cross-functional communication abilities.
Why Join Us?
• Space Exploration: Directly shape a next-generation orbital vehicle designed to carry cargo and future crew.
• Fast-Paced Culture: An agile, collaborative, transparent environment with minimal bureaucracy.
• Relocation & Sponsorship: Comprehensive relocation assistance and visa sponsorship provided where applicable.
