Role overview
Summary
The Animal Care Assistant II provides basic care for a variety of animals, including feeding, watering, and performing routine husbandry techniques like breeding and maintaining strains of mice. This role involves observing animals for unusual signs, administering medications, and maintaining accurate records according to established protocols and regulatory guidelines.
Anticipated Work Schedule: Wednesday-Sunday, 6:45 AM-3:15 PM or 7:00 AM-3:30 PM.
Desired Qualifications
Experience working with large animals, including monkeys and pigs, preferred.
Experience in a research or laboratory animal environment.
Core Responsibilities
Clean, sanitize and maintain assigned animal rooms and housing areas.
Feed and water animals according to established requirements.
Perform routine husbandry, including breeding, sexing, weaning and maintaining animal strains.
Observe and document unusual appearance, behavior, illness or death in animals.
Complete required records, forms and animal inventory documentation accurately.
Administer pre-measured medications according to established instructions.
Obtain routine diagnostic specimens, such as blood samples for viral testing.
Maintain appropriate separation of rodent strains.
Follow Stanford, NIH, USDA and departmental animal care and use requirements.
Transport animals, cages, supplies and equipment between research facilities as needed.
Load and unload vehicles using hand trucks, pallet jacks, dollies or forklifts.
Operate department vehicles, including non-commercial vans, trucks and light transit vehicles, when required.
Maintain vehicle sanitation and maintenance logs as needed.
Follow all health, safety and animal welfare procedures.
Perform Animal Care Assistant I duties and other responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED.
One year of applicable animal care experience in a research or laboratory animal environment, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of laboratory animal care practices and husbandry procedures.
Familiarity with NIH guidelines, Stanford animal care and use policies and USDA regulations.
Ability to read, write, understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Basic computer skills and familiarity with handheld devices such as iPads.
Ability to safely operate hand trucks, forklifts and pallet jacks.
Ability to safely operate non-commercial vans, trucks and light transit vehicles.
Physical Requirements
Frequently lift and carry materials up to 40 lbs and handle materials up to 20 lbs.
Ability to lift and move cages, feed, supplies and equipment weighing at least 50 lbs.
Occasionally carry or pull up to 60 lbs and push loads over 60 lbs.
Walk and stand for extended periods.
Bend, squat, reach above shoulder level and frequently use hands for handling tools and equipment.
Required visual abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral and depth perception.
Ability to communicate through talking and hearing.
Working Conditions
May require overtime, evenings, weekends and holidays, including work during inclement weather.
Direct contact with laboratory animals, animal housing and research environments.
Potential exposure to dust, fumes, gases, chemicals and other hazardous substances.
Work takes place in a secured facility where animals are used for teaching and research.
Must complete initial and annual Occupational Health Surveillance requirements and may require medical examinations or immunizations.
Must properly use and maintain required uniforms, equipment and supplies.
Employees should be free of animal-related allergies.
Must follow all health, safety, chemical handling and equipment procedures.
