Summary and responsibilities

Role overview

Summary

This Senior MAIT Electrical and Test Engineer role involves taking technical ownership of electrical test equipment and automated functional tests for spacecraft, engineering models, and test beds. The position requires defining, designing, integrating, and maintaining test systems, developing automated test software, and leading anomaly investigations to ensure mission success.

Here at The Exploration Company, we are building spacecraft for humanity. We are developing, producing, and operating Nyx, a modular, reusable orbital vehicle designed to carry cargo and future crewed missions, with in-orbit refueling capabilities.

We are seeking a Senior MAIT Electrical and Test Engineer to take technical ownership of electrical test equipment and automated functional verification across our flight hardware, engineering models, and test benches.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Take technical ownership of electrical ground support equipment (EGSE) and functional test capability across flight hardware, engineering models, and test benches from design to maintenance.

  • Formulate and maintain development schedules to guarantee test readiness for engineering model qualification and flight acceptance campaigns.

  • Analyze system and subsystem requirements to establish traceable functional test strategies, detailed procedures, and objective pass/fail criteria.

  • Lead the electrical architecture, wiring, integration, build, and troubleshooting of test systems, covering power distribution, instrumentation, signals, and communication interfaces.

  • Develop, optimize, and review automated test sequences, data acquisition pipelines, and safe-stop interlocks using LabVIEW and/or VeriStand.

  • Plan and coordinate Test Readiness Reviews (TRRs) to ensure systems, software, test beds, and safety protocols are fully verified before testing.

  • Conduct hands-on unit, subsystem, and system-level electrical integration and testing on both developmental and flight hardware.

  • Spearhead technical root-cause investigations into test anomalies, distinguishing unit-under-test issues from test equipment faults and overseeing non-conformance closure.

  • Interface with MAIT, systems engineering, software, mechanical, and quality assurance teams to coordinate technical test campaigns.

  • Provide mentorship, technical oversight, and procedural guidance to junior engineers and test technicians.

  • Support physical assembly, rack fabrication, and harness manufacturing for test setups when required.

  • Participate actively in environmental testing and launch site operations.

What We Would Love to See from You:

  • Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

  • Proven track record with electrical and electronic assemblies, ideally in spacecraft Assembly, Integration, and Test (AIT) or functional verification.

  • Demonstrated competence in independently managing full-lifecycle functional test campaigns from specifications through post-test data review.

  • Hands-on experience designing, assembling, and commissioning electrical test equipment, including rack builds, cable routing, harness fabrication, and connector selection.

  • Sound understanding of industrial network topologies and communication protocols, such as TCP/IP.

  • Practical experience developing automated test programs and data acquisition routines in LabVIEW or VeriStand; Python scripting skills are a plus.

  • Solid background in test automation, signal measurement chains, and systematic hardware debugging under strict configuration controls.

  • Experience directing anomaly resolutions and implementing objective, evidence-based retest plans.

  • Familiarity with mission operations or control software suites such as CCS5 or COSMOS is advantageous.

  • Experience working with high-power testing systems and space communication test sets is an asset.

  • Fluency in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, interface control documents, and engineering drawings.

  • Structured, meticulous approach to flight hardware handling and documentation.

  • Willingness to travel internationally for testing and launch campaigns.

Why Join Us:

  • Agile culture: We move quickly, iterate continuously, and make decisive choices without unnecessary red tape.

  • Collaborative environment: We prioritize radical transparency, shared ownership of challenges, and mission-focused teamwork.

  • High-impact mission: Contribute directly to the development of next-generation orbital infrastructure and the democratization of space exploration.

The Exploration Company is an equal opportunity employer committed to workforce diversity. Relocation assistance and visa sponsorship are provided where applicable.
