Summary

The Animal Care Supervisor is responsible for the comprehensive husbandry operations at the Children's Aquarium Dallas, overseeing animal care, procurement, and wellbeing. This role involves leading and mentoring the Animal Care Team, ensuring accurate record-keeping, disease prevention, and promoting continuous education and guest engagement.

Position Summary

Responsible for leading husbandry operations at the aquarium, including animal care, procurement, maintenance, wellbeing, record keeping, disease prevention, staff training, and guest education. This position provides hands-on leadership, develops the Animal Care Team, promotes animal welfare, supports cross-department collaboration, and helps create positive, educational, and engaging guest experiences.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead, supervise, coach, and mentor the Animal Care Team, promoting accountability, professional development, teamwork, and strong communication.

  • Serve as a visible, hands-on leader on the floor while maintaining high standards for animal care, guest engagement, and facility operations.

  • Interact positively with guests and support education, conservation messaging, and memorable aquarium experiences.

  • Coordinate staff schedules and activities related to animal inventory, care, feeding, enrichment, and transportation.

  • Oversee animal health, medical treatments, welfare standards, necropsy reports, and veterinary site visit reports.

  • Represent the aquarium with professional agencies, institutions, committees, and industry partners as needed.

  • Continuously improve animal exhibits, welfare practices, enrichment programs, and educational opportunities.

  • Coordinate with facilities and technical teams on life support systems (LSS), exhibits, maintenance, and infrastructure.

  • Support the development of new exhibits, interactive experiences, and educational opportunities that enhance guest engagement.

  • Ensure compliance with company policies, SOPs, health, safety, and regulatory requirements.

  • Maintain operational readiness and ensure team members follow established standards and procedures.

  • Manage emergency situations to minimize risks to guests, staff, animals, and facility property.

  • Assist in developing policies and procedures for animal operations, LSS, and exhibits.

  • Ensure accurate and complete records for inventory, medical care, mortalities, and animal dispositions.

  • Develop and oversee training programs covering technical animal care skills and guest engagement.

  • Conduct fair and timely performance evaluations and provide ongoing coaching, mentoring, and corrective guidance.

  • Maintain working knowledge of aquatic Life Support Systems, including filtration, pumps, plumbing, and water quality monitoring equipment.

  • Perform routine LSS inspections, basic troubleshooting, and minor repairs; promptly report equipment failures or water quality concerns.

  • Collaborate with facilities and technical teams on preventative maintenance and system reliability.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

  • Minimum three years of experience in a similar management role.

  • Degree in wildlife biology, marine biology, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.

  • Previous team management and demonstrated leadership experience required.

  • Strong background in animal biology and freshwater and saltwater aquarium operations.

  • Experience caring for flora and fauna in a public aquarium environment.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication, time management, listening, presentation, and decision-making skills.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word.

  • Creative, energetic, and adaptable problem solver with the ability to manage new projects and challenges.

Abilities

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.

  • Ability to read, listen, and communicate effectively in English, verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to use computer systems to accurately access and enter information.

  • Ability to recognize and respond to emergency situations using hearing and visual observation.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.

  • Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
