Clinical Veterinarian

Position Overview:

The Clinical Veterinarian advances Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance (DZCA) by providing comprehensive clinical veterinary care for zoo animals and supporting wildlife care, animal wellbeing, conservation, research, and nutrition programs. The position is part of a collaborative Veterinary Medicine team based in the 22,000-square-foot Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Animal Hospital, which includes advanced diagnostic and treatment capabilities such as CT imaging.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide high-quality, species-appropriate veterinary care including advanced diagnostics, anesthesia, surgery, emergency and critical care, pathology support, preventative medicine, and clinical case management.

• Coordinate appointments, procedures, outside clinical consultants, caseload management, and rotating emergency on-call coverage.

• Maintain complete medical records and controlled-substance documentation in compliance with DEA requirements.

• Support animal shipments, quarantine, biosecurity, pre-shipment evaluations, and Certificates of Veterinary Inspection (CVIs).

• Communicate clinical findings and treatment plans with Animal Care and Animal Wellbeing teams and collaborate on patient care.

• Assist with hospital operations, equipment, sanitation, safety, federal regulations, and AZA accreditation standards.

• Mentor zoological medicine residents, interns, and students and support the ACZM-compliant residency program.

• Lead or collaborate on veterinary research and present findings at professional meetings or through scientific publications.

• Collaborate across zoo departments and provide accurate veterinary information to staff, visitors, volunteers, vendors, and media through tours, public programs, and other outreach.

• Provide veterinary expertise for animal welfare assessments, behavioral husbandry, nutrition, field conservation, One Health, and Conservation Medicine initiatives.

• Participate in committees, task forces, administrative duties, and other professional activities as needed.

Qualifications:

• DVM, VMD, or equivalent degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary college.

• Four years of post-graduate veterinary experience, including 3 years working with zoological species. Completion of an ACZM-compliant zoological medicine residency is preferred.

• Research and scientific publication experience in zoological medicine preferred.

• Licensed veterinarian in Colorado or able to obtain licensure within 3 months of hire.

• ACZM board certification or ability to become board certified within 3 years of hire.

• Eligible for DEA controlled-substance registration and USDA Category II accreditation within 3 months of hire.

• Valid Colorado Class R driver’s license within 3 months of hire.

• Strong expertise in zoological medicine, diagnostics, anesthesia, surgery, treatment, epidemiology, and zoonotic diseases.

• Knowledge of scientific research methods, study design, and scientific publication.

• Strong computer, organizational, communication, collaboration, leadership, and mentoring skills.

• Ability to prioritize and manage complex workloads, meet deadlines, work independently and collaboratively, handle sensitive information diplomatically, and adapt in a fast-paced environment.

• Experience with Tracks software is a plus; strategic planning and management of complex teams or programs is preferred.
