This role involves assisting with the planning and execution of conservation and biobanking research projects for endangered species, including coordinating opportunistic collections from zoo animals. The technician will support both in situ and ex situ conservation efforts, performing laboratory assays, managing biological samples, and contributing to reproductive research and molecular biology tasks.
Essential Job Functions
- Assist with planning and executing conservation and biobanking projects focused on Southeastern endangered snakes and other wildlife; coordinate opportunistic sample collections during routine veterinary exams and post-mortem rescues.
- Support in situ conservation initiatives, including multi-day field trips across Louisiana, Florida, and Mississippi to collect wild snake samples, curate data, and process specimens.
- Support ex situ research programs, including captive-breeding assistance, laboratory assay execution, and training staff on collection protocols.
Key Responsibilities
Biobanking & Repository Management
- Collect, preserve, and catalog diverse biological materials (tissue, blood, gametes, and cell lines) from wildlife species.
- Maintain liquid nitrogen systems, ultra-low freezers, and digital inventory databases.
- Follow strict quality control, biosafety protocols, and sample custody standards.
- Travel to partner zoos and field facilities to collect and biobank specimens.
Reproductive Research & Biotechnology
- Assist in assisted reproductive technology (ART) protocols, including semen collection, gamete processing, evaluation, and cryopreservation.
- Prepare media, reagents, and specialized tools for reproductive physiology experiments.
- Support endocrine monitoring by performing fecal hormone extractions and enzyme immunoassays (EIAs).
- Record experimental data with high accuracy.
Molecular Biology Support
- Conduct routine DNA/RNA extractions from various wildlife tissue matrices.
- Run PCR and qPCR assays for pathogen screening, colony health tracking, and population genetics.
Laboratory Operations & Collaboration
- Maintain laboratory hygiene, biosafety compliance, and instrument upkeep alongside the Lab Manager.
- Partner with veterinarians, keepers, and external research collaborators.
- Aid in drafting permits, compliance reports, and scientific manuscripts.
- Supervise and mentor students, interns, and volunteers.
- Maintain an inclusive, productive, and safe laboratory culture.
- Carry out related operational tasks as assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Biology, Wildlife Science, Molecular Biology, Reproductive Physiology, Animal Science, or a related discipline.
- 1 to 2 years of hands-on academic or industry laboratory experience.
- Demonstrated competence in reproductive biology techniques (microscopy, gamete handling).
- Practical experience with semen analysis (CASA, flow cytometry, vital staining) and cryopreservation.
- Solid foundation in sterile techniques, liquid handling, and standard benchtop instrumentation.
- Record of contributing to peer-reviewed publications or scientific presentations.
- Experience communicating conservation science to professional and public audiences.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and statistical software (e.g., R).
- Valid driver’s license with an insurable driving record.
- Successful completion of background check, drug screen, and TB screening.
Preferred:
- Master’s degree in a related biological or wildlife science discipline.
- Direct experience with fecal steroid extractions and enzyme immunoassays.
- Direct experience with nucleic acid extraction and qPCR assay design or execution.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Requires standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, and precise manual dexterity with tools and controls.
- Occasional lifting and moving of supplies or equipment up to 50 pounds.
- Work takes place across indoor laboratories, office settings, outdoor zoo grounds, and off-site field locations.
- Fieldwork involves exposure to variable weather, humidity, outdoor field conditions, and laboratory chemical reagents.
