Job Summary
The Elephant Specialist provides safe, high-quality care for elephants while supporting White Oak Conservation's animal husbandry, health, research, and conservation programs.
Key Responsibilities
Perform daily elephant care, including feeding, cleaning, medication, training, enrichment, and record keeping. Support animal transfers, introductions, hand-rearing, research projects, and protected-contact training.
Assist with advanced husbandry procedures, including foot care, blood and semen collection, and veterinary treatments in collaboration with the elephant health team.
Maintain animal care facilities, food preparation and storage areas, vehicles, and equipment. Perform routine maintenance, including mowing, pressure washing, substrate work, gate adjustments, and minor repairs.
Maintain accurate animal records, monitor supplies and equipment needs, and ensure compliance with workplace safety procedures.
Support intern training in animal husbandry, animal management, research, conservation, and educational activities.
Collaborate with colleagues, veterinary professionals, and the public through effective communication, teamwork, and professional conduct.
Manage multiple responsibilities in a changing environment while maintaining high standards of animal welfare, organization, and time management.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required. An associate or bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Wildlife Management, Biology, or a related field is preferred.
Minimum of two years of husbandry experience with large ungulates; elephant husbandry experience is preferred.
Experience operating small equipment and farm machinery, such as mowers, weed-eaters, pressure washers, tractors, or skid steers, is desirable.
Valid Florida or Georgia driver's license required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements
The position requires outdoor work in all weather conditions, exposure to dust, fumes, odors, moving machinery, and vehicles, and occasional use of a five-foot ladder. Candidates must be able to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 50 pounds. Flexible scheduling is required, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency situations.
