Role overview

Summary

The Ecologist will play a key role in delivering high-quality ecological advice and survey work, managing projects from inception to completion. Responsibilities include undertaking habitat and protected species surveys, conducting desk studies, preparing technical reports, and supporting Biodiversity Net Gain assessments, all while balancing client objectives with nature recovery.

As a Consultant Ecologist at SWT Ecology Services, you will balance the objectives of developers with the needs of the environment, contributing directly to nature recovery across Surrey and beyond. You will be part of a team of 24 expert ecologists, GIS analysts, and support staff, working on a diverse portfolio of projects.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing and delivering ecological projects from inception to completion.

  • Undertaking habitat and protected species surveys.

  • Carrying out desk studies and ecological assessments.

  • Preparing technical reports, quotations and project documentation.

  • Supporting Biodiversity Net Gain assessments and habitat-based projects.

  • Managing project budgets and programme delivery.

  • Building positive relationships with clients, stakeholders and colleagues.

  • Contributing to business development and securing repeat business opportunities.

We are looking for someone passionate about ecology and nature conservation, who thrives in a collaborative consultancy environment. You should have demonstrable experience in managing and delivering small projects, strong report writing and communication skills, and the ability to manage workload and deadlines effectively.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Experience in undertaking and delivering Preliminary Ecological Appraisals.

  • Experience in Ecological Impact Assessments.

  • Experience in Ecological Clerk of Works.

  • Experience in protected species and habitat surveys.

  • Understanding of applying legislation and planning policy to client advice.

  • Demonstrable experience in managing and delivering small projects.

  • Strong report writing and communication skills.

  • Ability to manage workload and deadlines, prioritising tasks.

  • Ability to analyse and interpret data.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft package tools.

  • Valid UK driver’s licence and access to own transport.

  • Readiness to travel, work in the field, and work flexible hours.
