Summary and responsibilities

Role overview

Summary

This role involves managing and delivering ecological consultancy projects, including surveys, assessments, reporting, and mitigation design. Candidates will take ownership of projects, liaise with clients, and contribute to a varied portfolio of ecological work within a supportive environmental consultancy.

The Opportunity
Ocean to Earth Recruitment is working with an established and growing environmental consultancy looking to appoint Ecological Consultants and Senior Ecological Consultants across the West Midlands and central and southern England.

This is a strong opportunity for ecologists who enjoy the technical and project delivery side of consultancy and want to continue developing within a supportive, experienced team.

You will have the opportunity to take ownership of projects, work directly with clients and contribute to a varied portfolio of ecological work. For more experienced candidates, there will also be scope to take greater responsibility for project management and support the development of colleagues.

The organisation has a well-established presence within the environmental sector and works with clients across a broad range of development, land and infrastructure projects. There is a genuine focus on delivering good ecological outcomes while providing practical, technically robust advice.

Your Role
Depending on your level of experience, your work will include:

  • Managing and delivering ecological consultancy projects from initial survey through to reporting and recommendations.

  • Undertaking UK Habitat Classification surveys and habitat assessments.

  • Completing Biodiversity Net Gain assessments using the relevant statutory biodiversity metric.

  • Producing high-quality ecological reports to support planning and development projects.

  • Supporting the design and delivery of ecological mitigation and enhancement measures.

  • Managing project programmes, budgets and workloads.

  • Liaising directly with clients, project teams and other environmental professionals.

  • Contributing to protected species surveys and wider ecological fieldwork where appropriate.

At Senior level, you will be given greater autonomy over project delivery and client relationships, with opportunities to support and mentor less experienced members of the team.

About You
You will already have professional experience within ecological consultancy and be comfortable managing your own workload and delivering work to agreed deadlines.

You should have:

  • Experience undertaking UKHab surveys and assessments.

  • Practical experience of Biodiversity Net Gain assessments.

  • Good ecological report writing skills.

  • Experience managing ecological projects or individual workstreams.

  • Strong organisation and communication skills.

  • Confidence working with clients and colleagues across multidisciplinary projects.

  • A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel when required.

Protected species survey licences and a valid CSCS card would be useful, although they are not essential.

Applications are welcomed from candidates at both Consultant and Senior Consultant level, with responsibilities tailored to your experience.

Why Consider This Opportunity?
The role offers a good balance between technical ecology, project ownership and longer-term career development. You will be joining an established environmental team where there is scope to build your expertise rather than becoming limited to one narrow area of consultancy.

The package includes:

  • Salary of £30,500 to £42,000, depending on experience.

  • Paid overtime and Time Off in Lieu.

  • Flexible and remote working.

  • 24 days' annual leave, with the opportunity for this to increase as you progress.

  • Discretionary performance-related bonus.

  • Employee assistance programme.

  • Ongoing professional development and career support.

  • Opportunities to progress into more senior technical and project leadership positions.

The consultancy is continuing to invest in its natural environment services, creating opportunities for people who want to develop their careers while contributing to meaningful work around biodiversity, habitat protection and environmental enhancement.
