Role overview
Summary
Join an influential ecology team to deliver positive outcomes for nature across Cambridgeshire and Norfolk. This role offers a mix of field and office-based ecological work, providing flexibility and security while making a real difference to the environment.
About the Role
The Middle Level Commissioners (MLC) is an Internal Drainage Board (IDB) managing water levels across 701 km² of the Cambridgeshire and Norfolk Fens through an extensive network of rivers, embankments, pumping stations, and flood infrastructure. The Ecology team works to balance flood risk management and agricultural needs with the protection and enhancement of important Fenland habitats and species.
The Ecologist role offers a mix of field and office-based work, supporting statutory environmental responsibilities, ecological consultancy services, and biodiversity initiatives across the Middle Level and partner IDBs. The successful candidate will have experience in ecological appraisals, protected species and habitat surveys, mitigation and enhancement design, and ecological report writing.
Responsibilities
Undertake ecological surveys and appraisals for flood risk management works, capital projects, and IDB consent or planning applications. Conduct protected species surveys covering water voles, otters, badgers, bats, birds, great crested newts, reptiles, and other relevant species. Provide advice to applicants to ensure compliance with environmental legislation and secure opportunities for biodiversity enhancement.
Prepare and contribute to high-quality ecological reports, including survey reports, management plans, Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs), Habitats Regulations Assessments (HRAs), and SSSI assent documentation. Administer IDB Class Licences for badgers and water voles and undertake Ecological Clerk of Works duties and ecological toolbox talks.
Support practical conservation projects, including monitoring a nationally important eel pass and collecting eel biometric and trend data. Participate in non-native species control, monitor and maintain barn owl boxes, and support WaterLife Recovery East’s water vole recovery and mink control programmes.
Investigate environmental concerns, including reports of water pollution, and liaise with the Environment Agency and other relevant bodies to resolve issues. Respond to public enquiries regarding environmental matters and collect, manage, and submit ecological data to Environmental Records Centres.
Develop and maintain strong relationships with local and national environmental organisations, government bodies, stakeholders, and partner IDBs. Promote the environmental work and achievements of MLC and IDBs through public engagement, industry articles, consultations, and stakeholder communications. Contribute to national environmental policy consultations, identify potential funding opportunities, and prepare funding applications for environmental initiatives.
Support the Ecology and Environment Services Manager in meeting and exceeding MLC’s statutory environmental duties, delivering ecological consultancy services, and embedding environmental best practice across IDB operations. Promote understanding and appreciation of the Fenland environment and the positive role IDBs play in protecting and enhancing biodiversity.
