Animal Control Officer – General Description
The Animal Control Officer is responsible for enforcing animal control ordinances while protecting public health and safety. Duties include responding to complaints involving stray, injured, nuisance, or dangerous animals; capturing and transporting animals to the shelter; investigating animal bites; enforcing quarantine requirements; and educating the public about local animal control laws.
Primary responsibilities include receiving complaints by phone, radio, or in person; safely capturing animals using appropriate equipment; transporting animals for shelter intake, adoption, reclaim, euthanasia, or rabies testing; maintaining impound, bite, incident, and activity reports; issuing citations when necessary; and performing inspections to ensure compliance with animal ordinances. The position may also require court testimony regarding ordinance enforcement.
The officer routinely works at the animal shelter providing animal care, cleaning kennels and facilities, maintaining shelter grounds, operating landscaping equipment, cleaning the incinerator, performing basic building maintenance, maintaining city vehicles, and ensuring equipment is in proper working condition. Patrol of city streets to locate stray, injured, or deceased animals is required. The position also includes euthanizing sick, injured, or unclaimed animals in accordance with state law and approved procedures, including the handling of controlled substances after completing required certification.
The position requires sound judgment, quick decision-making, and effective communication with the public. Employees frequently interact with citizens to resolve complaints, explain animal control ordinances, and encourage voluntary compliance while maintaining accurate documentation of all enforcement activities.
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and may involve exposure to unpleasant environments. The role requires regular standing, walking, lifting, bending, climbing, and handling animals weighing up to 100 pounds. Good vision, hearing, and manual dexterity are essential.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Previous animal handling experience preferred.
Basic computer skills, including data entry, spreadsheets, and word processing.
At least 21 years of age.
Ability to complete the Oklahoma State Euthanasia Course.
Valid Oklahoma driver's license with an insurable driving record.
The position requires occasional evening, weekend, and holiday work. It is designated as a safety-sensitive position and is subject to pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with applicable federal and Oklahoma laws, including testing for marijuana regardless of medical marijuana license status.
