Role overview
Summary
This full-time Aviculturist position at Tracy Aviary involves direct animal care for over 300 birds, including cleaning, diet preparation, health care, and husbandry training. The role requires physical work outdoors in all weather conditions and includes training and supervising interns and volunteers.
Tracy Aviary is seeking an individual dedicated to avian husbandry, conservation, and education to fill the full-time position of Aviculturist in the Bird Care Department.
Summary:
The Bird Care Department includes Curator of Bird Care, Veterinarian, Registrar, Aviculture Manager, Bird Show Manager, Veterinary Technician, 6 Aviculture staff, and 5 Bird Show staff. We also have five full-time interns, rotating at 6 months. The department operates in two general capacities, exhibit/breeding birds (Aviculture) and ambassador program birds (Bird Show). Additionally, both teams support both wings of the department through exhibit cleaning coverage and the occasional back stage help.
This position is an animal care position working directly with a collection of over 300 birds, representing over 120 species. Duties involve physical work outdoors throughout the year in conditions common for Utah.
Successes in husbandry include recent hatchings: Southern Ground Hornbill, Cape Thick-Knee, Red-Capped Cardinal, Venezuelan Troupial, Red Siskin, Green-naped Pheasant Pigeon, Black-naped Fruit Dove, and Chilean Flamingo. Plume award for flamingo breeding. Multiple staff holding positions under SAFE and SSP programs. Many professional development opportunities including mandatory skills development through Susan Friendman’s How Behavior Works: LLA class for all Bird Care team members.
Successes in ambassador programs include growth in opportunities for our show teams to build on training programs and presentation skills, contributing to a greater integration of the bird care team. Groundbreaking programs that include roaming encounters with ambassador birds and a strong history of positive training techniques.
The Bird Care department is focused on a strong, engaging intern program committed to building skills that prepare interns for work in the zoo field. This program is also intentional in building leadership skills with the staff that mentor interns on a daily basis.
Job Duties:
Provides animal care essentials through cleaning (hosing, feces removal, raking, shoveling), diet preparation (including preparing items ranging from fruits and grains, to insects, rodents, and other meats), health and patient care (including providing vaccinations, triage care, and treatments for patients), safety (including exhibit repair, animal capture and restraint), provision of enrichment, and husbandry training.
Learns about the cultural and natural history of the animals in the collection.
Works with the horticulture team on exhibit needs and plant care.
Observes and records the health and behavior of the birds, recording daily details through the online database.
Performs some computer related tasks (updating protocols, responding to email).
Working with people is just as important as working with animals. Duties include training and supervising interns and volunteers while communicating effectively with team members.
Physical work requirements include lifting up to 50lbs, bending, cleaning, use of non-motorized and motorized tools, pulling of carts, carrying large items, climbing ladders, and driving vehicles.
Animals need care 365 days a year. Bird Care staff work all holidays and weekends, luckily they have some great feathered colleagues to spend their days with, and supportive team members if they need flexibility with those days!

Must Haves for Applicants:
One year paid experience caring for birds.
Passionate about birds and conservation.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to follow direction from supervisors and colleagues.
Experience working in a team environment.
Experience providing and receiving constructive feedback.
