Summary and responsibilities

Role overview

Summary

This Senior C++ Performance Engineer role at Agile Robots focuses on optimizing the AgileCore Runtime, ensuring its speed, thread-safety, and diagnosability for complex robotic systems. The engineer will drive performance improvements, build real-time infrastructure, and mentor the team in performance, concurrency, and troubleshooting.

Job Title: Senior C++ Performance Engineer (AgileCore Runtime)

Company: Agile Robots

Location: Munich, Germany

Company Overview:

Agile Robots develops software and hardware solutions to orchestrate complex robotic systems across global industrial work cells. Our platform, AgileCore, powers multi-project robotics deployments where high throughput, determinism, and reliability are vital.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a Senior C++ Performance Engineer to join the AgileCore Runtime core team. In this T-shaped role, you are a core contributor to Runtime platform development, code reviews, and releases, while serving as the primary authority on performance, thread safety, and diagnosability. You will design greenfield benchmarking infrastructure, turn architectural budgets into enforced CI regression gates, and optimize hot paths running against real hardware-in-the-loop robotics rigs.

Key Responsibilities:

* Own the latency, throughput, and jitter of the Runtime core, including the Blackboard data plane and the Behavior Engine.

* Drive performance initiatives end to end, from profiling and flame graphs to merged changes and sustained CI regression gates.

* Establish real-time fundamentals on Linux, including CPU affinity, thread scheduling policies, hot-path memory allocation discipline, and lock-free data structures.

* Serve as the team authority on multi-threading, concurrency models, memory ordering, and data-race elimination using sanitizers and soak testing.

* Improve observability and root-cause analysis through structured logging, tracing, metrics, crash handling, and core dump analysis.

* Ensure low-latency performance across the Plugin SDK and its C ABI where third-party components interact with 1 kHz vendor control loops.

* Troubleshoot complex field escalations across software, OS, network, and hardware boundaries.

* Collaborate with the platform architect to establish performance budgets and mentor engineers through technical reviews and knowledge sharing.

* Participate actively in core platform feature work, code reviews, and release rotations.

Essential Qualifications:

* 7+ years of professional software engineering experience with strong hands-on modern C++ (C++17 or C++20).

* Proven performance engineering background, including flame graphs, hardware counters, tail-latency analysis, and CI-backed benchmarks.

* Deep experience in concurrent programming, memory models, atomics, lock-free patterns, and synchronization primitives.

* Working knowledge of Linux systems engineering, including process models, IPC, memory management, scheduling, and dynamic linking.

* Strong diagnostic capabilities using GDB, sanitizers (ASan, TSan, UBSan), perf, strace, and core dumps.

* Experience with CMake, modern compiler toolchains (GCC, Clang), automated unit and integration testing, and soak/stress testing.

* Pragmatic mindset focused on shipping high-impact optimizations that meet defined product budgets.

Beneficial Qualifications:

* Background in database internals, memory allocators, MVCC, runtimes, or storage engines.

* Experience in low-latency domains such as trading systems, audio/video streaming, telecom, or embedded motion control.

* Real-time Linux expertise, kernel scheduling, IRQ handling, ftrace, cyclictest, or eBPF.

* Familiarity with C ABI stability and shared-library plugin architecture.

* Experience with instrumentation profilers such as Tracy or VTune.

* Knowledge of Windows internals, MSVC toolchains, or network protocols (TCP, UDP, sockets).

What We Offer:

* Dynamic international workplace with over 60 nationalities.

* High-impact engineering on advanced physical robotics systems.

* Corporate benefits program providing 100 EUR net per month toward health, mobility, and learning.

* Modern Munich office with a rooftop terrace, complimentary drinks and fruit, and team events.
