Animal Care Assistant I
The Veterinary Service Center (VSC) at Stanford University, within the Department of Comparative Medicine, provides laboratory animal care and is accredited by AAALAC. The Animal Care Assistant I performs basic and routine animal care, custodial, sanitation, equipment, and facility support duties in a research environment.
Schedule: Monday-Friday, approximately 6:45 AM-3:15 PM or 7:00 AM-3:30 PM. Overtime, evenings, weekends, and holidays may be required.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide basic care and husbandry for a variety of laboratory animal species, including feeding, watering, cage cleaning, and cage changes according to SOPs and research protocols.
Sanitize and sterilize cages, feeders, water bottles, and other animal care equipment using prescribed procedures.
Operate cage washers, sterilizing equipment, and other animal care equipment.
Assemble clean cage setups and disassemble dirty cages for disposal or recycling.
Organize and stage clean caging equipment and supplies.
Transport animals, cages, equipment, and supplies within animal care facilities and perform routine animal transfers.
Observe animals for obvious signs of illness or death and promptly report concerns.
Conduct animal censuses and maintain accurate records of births, deaths, cage inventory, washing/sterilization temperatures, and other required information.
Complete standard forms, inventory records, and other documentation.
Follow all animal care, research, health, safety, and sanitation procedures.
Work cooperatively with team members and communicate effectively with colleagues and clients.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED.
Ability to read, write, understand, and follow written and oral instructions in English.
Ability to learn techniques and procedures for caring for and handling various animal species.
Ability to handle small animals safely.
Ability to maintain cleanliness, organization, and detailed records.
Basic computer skills and familiarity with handheld devices such as iPads.
Ability to operate sterilizing and animal care equipment.
Valid California non-commercial Class C driver’s license required when driving.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift and move at least 50 pounds, including feed bags, cages, supplies, and equipment.
Frequently handle materials up to 20 pounds; often lift/carry up to 40 pounds; occasionally carry or pull up to 60 pounds and push over 60 pounds.
Ability to walk and stand for extended periods and frequently bend, squat, reach overhead, and use hands for handling tools and equipment.
Adequate close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception, as well as hearing and communication abilities.
Ability to work while using a Powered Air-Purifying Respirator (PAPR).
Working Conditions:
Work directly with animals and within animal housing and research environments.
Potential exposure to dust, fumes, gases, chemicals, and toxic substances.
Work in a secured facility supporting animal teaching and research activities.
Must be able to work in varying conditions, including inclement weather when required.
Employees must follow all health, safety, chemical handling, equipment, and facility procedures.
Must complete initial and annual occupational health surveillance and may be required to undergo physical examinations, immunizations, and regular hearing testing.
Must be able to work safely around animals and should be free from animal-related allergies.
Responsible for proper use and care of uniforms, supplies, and equipment provided by VSC.
Must comply with Stanford University policies, safety standards, and applicable driving requirements.
