Role overview

Summary

The Zookeeper/Laborer at Capron Park Zoo is responsible for the daily care, observation, and maintenance of zoo animals, exhibits, grounds, and facilities. This includes feeding, cleaning enclosures, participating in animal wellbeing programs, maintaining records, and performing semi-skilled repairs and groundskeeping.

The City of Attleboro seeks a Zookeeper/Laborer for Capron Park Zoo who, under the direction of animal care management, is responsible for the daily care, observation, and maintenance of zoo animals, exhibits, grounds, and facilities.


Duties include:

  • Preparing food and providing feeding and watering of zoo animals and plants.

  • Transfers animals to and from enclosures and catches, crates, and restrains animals for transportation or veterinary care.

  • Cleans and disinfects animal enclosures.

  • Participates in the Zoo’s Behavioral Husbandry and Animal Wellbeing Program by providing enrichment, utilizing operant conditioning to train animals, and conducting welfare assessments.

  • Maintains accurate daily records and prepares reports.

  • Performs semi-skilled and skilled exhibit repairs and maintains buildings, exhibits, and adjoining grounds, including snow removal, mowing, weeding, and weed whacking.

  • Under the guidance of the Veterinarian, observes and cares for ill and newborn animals, maintains records, and administers medications and treatment for minor injuries.

  • Maintains inventory of feed supplies and produce and assists with maintaining the Commissary.

  • Cross-trains and rotates among different areas of the Zoo and works with a variety of animal species, serving in both primary and relief roles as assigned.

  • Answers inquiries and provides information to the public and may assist with emergency response.

  • Performs related work as required.


Requirements:

  • Associate’s degree in Biology or within Animal Science field and a minimum of one year of animal care experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge of animal care, including experience with exotic animals, is required.

  • Good communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in emergency situations.

  • Must be able to operate light trucks, automobiles, power and hand tools, typical zoological equipment, and medical equipment.

  • Experience with microscopes and tranquilizer rifles is preferred.

  • A valid state driver’s license is required.

  • A firearms license is preferred but not required.
