Summary
This role involves implementing and supporting a Bird Hazard Prevention & Wildlife Management program at Brussels Airport. Key responsibilities include conducting risk assessments, managing airport grounds to deter wildlife, performing interventions to minimize hazards, and collecting and analyzing data on animal presence and behavior.
What you will achieve with us:
Execution of a Bird Hazard Prevention & Wildlife Management program
You guarantee the execution of and provide support for a scientific “bird and wildlife risk assessment” study, to identify the potential risks associated with the presence of birds and other animal species on the airport grounds.
You actively collaborate with Air Traffic Controllers and other operational services at the airport.
Actions within the framework of a Bird Hazard Prevention & Wildlife Management program
You manage the airport grounds to reduce its attractiveness for birds and other animal species.
You take and register concrete actions to minimize “wildlife hazard” (detection and deterrence of birds).
You perform effective interventions according to appropriate methods (deterrence, trapping, or removal of animals if they pose a possible danger) in case of failure of preventive measures.
You prepare reports and messages for airlines and Air Traffic Controllers (with information about present animal species and possible dangers).
You continuously listen to communications via the tower frequency and maintain continuous contact with Airport Inspection via trunking.
You respond to communications received via the internal “trunking system”.
You support the Bird & Wildlife Coordinator in guiding external hunters and providing the necessary safety instructions.
Collection of relevant information
You observe and daily register all present animal species on the airport grounds (numbers, habitats, behavior, biological characteristics, wintering grounds, migration routes, …).
You set up and maintain statistics with relevant data and information about the present animals, biological data, favorite locations, numbers, …
You keep the various statistics up-to-date to identify long-term trends and to evaluate the effectiveness of actions/interventions.
You register data regarding bird and wildlife strikes and possible damage to aircraft.
You follow specialized press and, if necessary, launch proposals for the purchase of specialized material.
What distinguishes you:
Higher Secondary Education level or equivalent by experience.
In possession of a hunting license issued by the Flemish Region or willing to obtain one.
Thorough knowledge of wildlife in general and birds in particular (animal species and their behavior, their biotope, …) or a strong interest in learning.
Knowledge of airport operations and airport topography.
In possession of an Airside airport driving license or willing to obtain one after employment.
Knowledge regarding statistics management.
Knowledge of firearms and ammunition (flares, blank cartridges, shot, …).
Spoken knowledge of the second national language and spoken knowledge of English.
