Wildlife Habitat Biologist - Eastern Colorado
We are hiring a Wildlife Habitat Biologist to deliver wildlife habitat conservation projects across eastern Colorado. This position is a partnership between the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and Bird Conservancy of the Rockies. The biologist will work with agricultural producers to improve wildlife habitat through conservation planning, resource assessments, habitat surveys, and project implementation on private lands.
Key Responsibilities
Provide technical and programmatic support for wildlife habitat conservation and recommend management practices for landowners.
Enroll privately owned lands in USDA Farm Bill Conservation Programs, including EQIP, WLFW, GRP, and CRP.
Develop comprehensive conservation plans and coordinate projects involving water and fence improvements, grazing management, invasive species treatment, range plantings, and habitat restoration.
Build and maintain strong relationships with landowners, agricultural producers, conservation organizations, wildlife agencies, and local resource professionals.
Work with USFWS Partners Program, state wildlife programs, NRCS, and other partners to implement voluntary, incentive-based conservation projects.
Conduct habitat surveys, biological assessments, monitoring, and resource evaluations.
Develop and deliver trainings, outreach materials, and educational products for landowners and stakeholders.
Collaborate with Bird Conservancy of the Rockies’ Science, Education, and other program teams.
Monitor existing restoration projects and recommend management activities.
Use critical thinking to develop conservation projects targeting priority landscapes.
Maintain technical proficiency in conservation planning and agency business tools.
Travel regularly throughout eastern Colorado using a provided vehicle, including to remote field locations.
WHB II Additional Responsibilities
Independently identify, lead, and deliver wildlife habitat enhancement and restoration projects on private lands.
Lead conservation projects in partnership with USDA-NRCS, landowners, state wildlife programs, and other conservation partners.
Lead and deliver formal trainings and outreach products focused on habitat restoration and improved land management.
Integrate conservation work with Bird Conservancy of the Rockies’ Science and Education programs.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, ecology, rangeland ecology, natural resources, human dimensions of natural resources, or a related conservation field. M.S. preferred.
Working knowledge of USDA Farm Bill Conservation Programs is preferred.
Practical understanding of habitat restoration, ecology, wildlife conservation, and land management.
Knowledge of eastern Colorado flora and fauna, particularly grassland ecosystems, is preferred.
Strong written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to work effectively with landowners, agricultural producers, government agencies, conservation organizations, and community representatives.
Self-motivated and comfortable working independently under remote supervision.
Ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and priorities.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office. GIS experience is desirable.
Valid driver’s license and ability to travel regularly throughout the region.
Physical and Work Requirements
Ability to work in office and outdoor environments in varying weather conditions.
Ability to stand, walk, and hike for extended periods.
Ability to lift up to 30 pounds of equipment regularly.
Ability to work independently in remote locations where wildlife, livestock, terrain, and weather may present hazards.
Ability to troubleshoot field issues such as flat tires, vehicle problems, and livestock gates.
Ability to operate federal vehicles, including cars, trucks, ATVs, and UTVs.
Ability to use GPS devices, smartphones, tablets, and other technology for navigation and field data collection.
The position involves frequent travel across eastern Colorado and regular interaction with private landowners, agricultural producers, government agencies, and conservation partners.
