Role overview
Summary
The Insectary Technician supports daily insectary operations, including maintaining mosquito colonies, producing mosquitoes for bioassays and field validations, and assisting with research. This role involves working in both laboratory and field settings, adhering to protocols, and communicating professionally with colleagues and the public.
Work Environment
The work environment varies and may include laboratories, office buildings, workshops, animal rearing and storage facilities, helicopters, boats, vehicles, mangroves, fields, and islands. Work in insectaries may involve exposure to high heat and humidity. Fieldwork may involve all weather conditions, including exposure to sun, rain, mud, manure, farm animals, and insects. Frequent local travel may be required. Noise levels are generally low, with occasional moderate noise exposure around helicopters. Employees may frequently work with chemicals and biological control organisms that must be stored, handled, applied, used, and disposed of according to applicable labeling and safety instructions.
