Position Summary
American Bird Conservancy (ABC) is seeking a results-focused conservation professional to support the Rio Grande Joint Venture (RGJV), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), and other partners in enhancing wildlife habitat across streams, riparian areas, and uplands of the Chihuahuan Desert. This limited-term position will provide technical and financial assistance for habitat restoration and management on private and public lands and support the goals of the Texas Conservation Action Plan, National Fish Conservation Area in the Chihuahuan Desert, and regional, national, and international bird conservation plans.
Primary Duties
Conduct outreach to private landowners, agencies, and conservation partners and provide technical assistance for habitat restoration and management.
Develop conservation implementation plans, including site assessments, mapping, project designs, and specifications.
Establish, restore, and maintain grassland and riparian habitats.
Collect and analyze monitoring data for grassland and stream restoration projects.
Implement low-tech, process-based stream restoration practices, including siting and laying out in-stream structures and supervising construction.
Present research, findings, and conservation outcomes to partners, professional audiences, conservation organizations, and the public.
Operate work trucks, trailers, UTVs, and appropriate heavy equipment to support restoration and habitat management activities.
Provide technical assistance on stream restoration techniques and construction.
Coordinate and assist with required permits for restoration and habitat management projects.
Maintain accurate project records, reports, and correspondence.
Work outdoors in challenging weather and terrain; wade streams, walk uneven ground, perform manual labor, and work around heavy equipment.
Travel to project sites and occasionally spend time away from home (up to 25%).
Lift and move materials weighing up to 40 lbs.
Operate or learn to operate excavators, track/dump trucks, skid steers, farm tractors, and power tools including chainsaws, drills, and cutoff saws.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in biology, hydrology, environmental engineering, geology, environmental science, range science, natural resources management, or a closely related field; or bachelor’s degree with equivalent relevant experience.
Fundamental knowledge of water, environmental, agricultural, and/or natural resource sciences.
Knowledge of grassland and/or riparian ecology and restoration principles.
Experience or demonstrated ability in conservation planning, habitat management, ecosystem restoration, hydrology, environmental engineering, or environmental planning.
Ability to develop and write habitat management and conservation implementation plans.
Ability to conduct site investigations, sampling, data analysis, and technical assessments.
Strong computer, database, and specialized software skills.
Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to work effectively with landowners, land managers, agencies, universities, consultants, nonprofits, advisory boards, and the public.
Ability to analyze and present technical information and maintain accurate records.
Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
Some hands-on conservation planning and implementation experience preferred.
Valid state driver’s license.
Authorized to work in the U.S. or be a permanent resident.
Additional Requirements
Remote and hybrid employees must have reliable high-speed internet (ideally 30–40 Mbps download and 10–15 Mbps upload) and may be required to use a personal cell phone for ABC systems. Occasional air and vehicle travel is required; air travel is expected for distances over 350 miles. Background screening is required.
