Animal Care Attendant – Sacramento County Animal Shelter

General Summary
Under general supervision, feeds and cares for animals while maintaining safe, clean, and sanitary kennel facilities and equipment.

Knowledge

  • Methods, materials, and practices used to clean animal facilities.

  • Feeding, handling, and general care of animals.

  • Physical and behavioral characteristics of various animal species.

  • Basic signs and symptoms of common animal diseases.

Abilities

  • Work courteously and effectively with coworkers, staff, volunteers, and the public from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.

  • Read, write, and communicate effectively in English.

  • Safely handle aggressive or threatening animals.

  • Learn humane and safe animal euthanasia procedures.

  • Learn to operate equipment used to handle small and large animals, birds, reptiles, and livestock.

  • Safely operate a County vehicle when required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Six months of paid or unpaid, full-time experience in animal care and treatment.

  • Qualifying experience may include veterinary technician/helper, kennel attendant, SPCA attendant, zoo attendant, 4-H, farm, or animal training experience.

  • Minimum age: 18 years.

Licenses & Permits

  • Valid California Class C or higher Driver License may be required at appointment.

  • Some positions may require a California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license.

  • Employees must obtain a Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit through the State Veterinary Medical Board within three months of appointment when required.

Background Requirements
Candidates receiving a conditional offer may be subject to criminal history, fingerprinting, reference, employment, driving history, professional license, and other applicable background checks. All checks are conducted in accordance with applicable federal and California laws and County policies.

Physical Requirements
Must be able to:

  • Stand and walk for extended periods.

  • Bend, stoop, squat, and crawl in confined or low areas.

  • Climb ladders and work at elevated levels.

  • Lift up to 40 lbs. and occasionally lift up to 80 lbs. with assistance.

Working Conditions

  • Exposure to infectious, poisonous, aggressive, or threatening animals and chemicals used in euthanasia.

  • Outdoor work in varying weather conditions.

  • Exposure to dust, dirt, odors, animal fur, dander, and excrement.

  • Work weekends, holidays, fluctuating schedules, non-routine hours, and after-hours call-outs as needed.

  • Work at various County locations.

  • Wear a department-approved uniform.

Probationary Period
Six months.
