Role overview

Summary

Lead the development and implementation of informed, equitable, and practicable strategies to advance global sustainable aquaculture. This role involves managing a team of aquaculture scientists, overseeing assessment and verification processes, and serving as the Monterey Bay Aquarium's resident expert and primary spokesperson on sustainable aquaculture.

Summary

The Senior Aquaculture Program Manager leads the development and implementation of global sustainable aquaculture strategies, oversees the Seafood Watch Aquaculture Standards and assessment programs, manages scientific research initiatives, and collaborates with global partners to advance environmentally and socially responsible aquaculture. This role serves as Monterey Bay Aquarium's subject matter expert on sustainable aquaculture and provides strategic leadership across research, standards, and stakeholder engagement.

Key Responsibilities

Program Leadership

  • Lead and manage the Seafood Watch Aquaculture assessment and verification programs.

  • Supervise aquaculture scientists, contractors, and research staff, including hiring, training, mentoring, performance management, and annual reviews.

  • Develop annual work plans and strategic priorities for aquaculture assessments and improvement initiatives.

  • Ensure consistent application and quality of Seafood Watch standards and assessment processes.

Research & Standards

  • Lead the development and periodic revision of Seafood Watch Aquaculture Standards.

  • Provide scientific oversight for aquaculture research, ensuring research integrity and transparency.

  • Design and support research projects addressing sustainability challenges, disease management, ecosystem impacts, and governance.

  • Conduct expert reviews and perform assessments for complex or high-profile aquaculture systems.

  • Integrate research findings into program strategies and sustainability tools.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Collaborate with government agencies, industry, NGOs, researchers, and conservation partners to advance sustainable aquaculture.

  • Develop improvement strategies and remediation plans with aquaculture stakeholders.

  • Lead workshops, training sessions, and technical meetings for staff and external partners.

  • Represent Monterey Bay Aquarium in conferences, advisory committees, public presentations, and media engagements.

Qualifications

Required

  • Advanced degree in Marine Science, Environmental Science, Aquaculture, or a related field.

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in aquaculture or a related field.

  • At least 5 years of research project and team management experience.

  • Strong knowledge of sustainable aquaculture, environmental governance, and scientific research methods.

  • Strong analytical, data management, and scientific writing skills.

  • Outstanding communication, facilitation, and stakeholder engagement skills.

Working Conditions

  • Remote or Monterey, California-based position.

  • Frequent domestic and international travel (approximately twice per month).

  • Office-based work combined with field visits to aquaculture operations, conferences, and stakeholder meetings.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. occasionally and perform standard office activities.
