Summary
Responsible for the daily care of animals, exhibits, and grounds to AZA standards. Duties include providing high-quality animal care, preparing food, maintaining detailed records, and interacting with zoo visitors. This role requires strenuous manual labor and participation in public relations and educational programming.
The Roosevelt Park Zoo is currently seeing qualified applicants for a full time Zookeeper. Responsible for the daily care of animals, exhibits, and grounds in areas of the Zoo as assigned to the highest standards expected by the Roosevelt Park Zoo and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Provide general maintenance in and around exhibits and maintain landscaping throughout. Demonstrate a high level of Customer Service along with participating in public relations activities and educational programming. Ensure the safety of the animals along with guests and maintain records as required to communicate and document information in your care.
Job duties include:
Provides high quality daily care for animals' psychological and physiological well-being.
Provides approved diet, enrichment and behavioral training procedures.
Prepares food and feeds according to established diets and assigned schedule.
Maintains detailed narratives and charts of animal observations, care, and handling for detailed record keeping.
Observes animals in assigned areas for injuries or symptoms of disease, and changes in behavior.
Reports changes and problems to the General Curator and Senior Lead keeper.
Assists in animals’ preventative medical program under supervision of the staff Veterinarian.
Administers prescribed medication to assigned animals by mixing with food or as required; assists veterinarian in administration of medication or treatment of animals.
Completes record keeping daily for medications administered, changes in animal behavior, and symptoms of disease or other indications of needs for special attention, and any repair or maintenance required for enclosures using Species 360: ZIMS.
Unloads and stores shipments of food and supplies; notifies supervisor of supplies needed.
Cleans animal enclosures using water hose, soap, disinfectants, high pressure steam, and hand tools.
Performs a variety of general grounds keeping duties and assists in maintaining the Zoo’s facilities.
Interacts with and provides information to zoo visitors; may conduct zoo tours as required including keeper chats and training demos.
Participates in the Zoo’s animal outreach activities.
Requirements:
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff.
Ability to engage and help zoo visitors with high level of guest service.
Must be able to work in diverse and variable weather conditions, perform strenuous manual labor including the ability to lift 50 lbs., stoop, bend, and move quickly.
Must be able to work independently and effectively in a team environment, equally with guests, staff, and volunteers.
Requires the ability to work weekends and holidays as assigned.
One-year experience in zookeeping.
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Zoology or related (preferred, or combination of experience and education).
Valid driver license.
Ability to pass pre-employment background check.
Ability to pass annual TB tests.
This is a benefitted position with a weekly work schedule of 40 hours per week.
