Summary
This Bio-Technician I position is responsible for conducting on-ground biological monitoring, predator control, and responding to injured or dead bird incidents. The role involves coordinating with project biologists and state agencies to ensure compliance with wildlife protection regulations and company policies at Timbers Kaua‘i.
This position is responsible for conducting biological monitoring and wildlife management activities to support compliance with State of Hawaii and federal wildlife permits. Working under the direction of the Wildlife Biologist and Avian Bio-Tech II, the role focuses on protected bird monitoring, predator control, wildlife incident response, habitat protection, and coordination with the Hawaii Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW). Responsibilities include field surveys, documentation, reporting, equipment operation, and ensuring resort operations are conducted in accordance with wildlife conservation requirements.
Duties & Responsibilities
Conduct Nene and native waterbird surveys and other wildlife monitoring activities as directed.
Respond to injured or deceased protected wildlife by documenting incidents, transporting injured animals for care, recovering carcasses, and preparing required reports.
Coordinate with project biologists, DOFAW, and internal management to ensure compliance with wildlife permits and conservation protocols.
Assist with installation and maintenance of wildlife protection measures, including fencing, barriers, and habitat management structures.
Monitor golf course, landscaping, and construction activities to identify and report potential impacts to protected species.
Safely operate golf carts, power tools, predator traps, and other field equipment.
Maintain accurate field records, reports, and project documentation.
Participate in training sessions, meetings, and additional conservation projects as assigned.
Promote a safe, collaborative, and professional work environment while interacting with staff, contractors, and the public.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Six months of wildlife monitoring or related field experience, or a relevant college degree.
Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with protected species monitoring, wildlife handling, or habitat management.
Familiarity with environmental compliance, wildlife permits, or conservation programs.
Experience using field data collection tools and preparing technical reports.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of biological monitoring techniques, wildlife conservation practices, and environmental regulations.
Understanding of field data collection, records management, and technical documentation.
Ability to interpret and apply federal, state, and local wildlife regulations.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and manage assigned projects from data collection through reporting.
Proficiency with standard computer applications and data management tools.
Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders and maintain professional working relationships.
Physical Requirements
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions for extended periods.
Frequent walking, standing, kneeling, bending, and use of hands for field activities.
Occasional crouching, crawling, and lifting or moving up to 75 lbs.
Ability to safely operate field equipment and vehicles.
Adequate vision and hearing for wildlife monitoring, field observations, and safe equipment operation.
Willingness to work in environments with moderate noise, moving equipment, airborne particles, and other typical outdoor field conditions.
