Working Lands Biologist – Southwest New Jersey
Ducks Unlimited, Inc.
Ducks Unlimited (DU), in partnership with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), is seeking a full-time Working Lands Biologist to deliver wetland and wildlife conservation programs on private lands in Southwest New Jersey.
The position focuses on addressing wildlife habitat, water quality, and soil health through USDA Farm Bill and DU conservation programs. The successful candidate will build relationships with private landowners, provide technical conservation assistance, and collaborate with NRCS and conservation partners. This is a full-time term position with DU's Great Lakes Atlantic Regional Office (Dexter, MI) but based in a USDA field office in New Jersey. Occasional work may support projects in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and New York.
Key Responsibilities
Conservation Planning & Technical Assistance (60%)
Provide technical and program assistance to private landowners for wildlife and wetland conservation.
Conduct site visits to assess eligibility for USDA Farm Bill, Wetland Reserve Easement (WRE), Ducks Unlimited, and other conservation programs.
Develop wetland habitat management, tree planting, grass planting, water-level management, and moist-soil management plans.
Assist landowners with conservation program applications, contracts, ranking, and conservation planning using NRCS Conservation Desktop.
Prepare Compatible Use Authorizations (CUAs) for WRE properties.
Collaborate with NRCS and conservation partners to maximize habitat, water quality, and soil health benefits.
Assist with outreach, workshops, mapping, training, and educational materials to increase program participation.
Program Support (30%)
Support Wetland Reserve Easement technical assistance efforts in New York.
Provide expertise on regional working lands conservation projects.
Help improve conservation program delivery.
Prepare monthly and annual reports documenting landowner assistance, habitat improvements, acreage, and program activities.
Professional Development (10%)
Participate in technical training related to wetland management.
Assist with grant writing and project budget development as assigned.
Required Knowledge & Skills
Knowledge of wetland, coastal, and grassland ecosystems, including identification of wetland flora and fauna.
Understanding of migratory waterfowl ecology and wetland habitat management.
Experience developing conservation and habitat management plans.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ArcGIS.
Familiarity with USDA Farm Bill and Wetland Reserve Easement programs is preferred.
Strong communication, organization, and report-writing skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Ability to work outdoors in remote locations and varying weather conditions.
Ability to operate UTVs, ATVs, trucks, trailers, and other field equipment.
Valid driver's license and willingness to use a personal vehicle with mileage reimbursement when necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in natural resource conservation, wildlife management, agriculture, or a closely related field.
At least 2 years of experience managing wetland or wildlife systems is strongly preferred.
Willingness to perform field and office work, including occasional overnight travel.
Ability to work in challenging outdoor conditions.
