Summary
This professional management position focuses on wildlife conservation and management for public lands including Glen Elder Wildlife Area. Responsibilities encompass developing and maintaining wildlife habitat, supervising staff, managing budgets, and enforcing laws to protect natural resources and ensure public safety.
This permanent, full-time unclassified position is in the Public Lands Division, Region 1, and is directly supervised by the Public Lands Regional Supervisor for Region 1.
Key Responsibilities:
Professional management in wildlife conservation and management for Glen Elder Wildlife Area, Jewell State Fishing Lake, and Gurley Salt Marsh Wildlife Area.
Developing and maintaining wildlife habitat and outdoor recreation facilities.
Providing public safety and assistance on assigned properties.
Directly supervises and coordinates full-time and seasonal staff.
Budget preparation and expenditure tracking.
Preparing documents, reports, and management plans.
Assisting other divisions and various state and federal agencies with environmental issues.
Purchasing supplies and equipment.
Participating, directing, and supervising land and habitat management work.
Administering agricultural leases.
Supervising and participating in the construction, maintenance and repair of area buildings, equipment, and roads.
Contracting for specific services, ensuring contract compliance.
Assisting in scientific field studies and experiments relating to wildlife and recreational use.
Providing public information through website updates and local media.
Promoting wildlife conservation through public speaking, writing and general contact.
Actively participating in interviews, hiring, and training of employees.
Administering and participating in law enforcement activities on assigned areas; detecting violations, making arrests, collecting evidence, preparing cases and testifying, as required.
Cooperating/coordinating with Natural Resource Officers and local law enforcement agencies to enforce laws, rules and regulations.
Minimum Requirements:
High School diploma or GED equivalent.
Must be 21 years of age.
Four years of experience in directing a field office with operations relevant to the agency's operations.
Applicants with experience in managerial work over a wildlife area or other public lands, assisting with the responsibilities of conservation, operations, construction, maintenance, and public services will be given preference.
Must attain and maintain professional licenses and certificates as determined by project demands.
Must possess & maintain a valid driver’s license and the ability to pass a background check.
Necessary Special Requirements:
Required to be certified as a law enforcement officer by the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Commission. Certification must be obtained before permanent status.
Must complete a basic law enforcement training program recognized by the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Commission and annual training as required by K.S.A. 74-5607a.
Position requires the use of a firearm for law enforcement duties; candidates cannot have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor domestic violence crime.
Must be a U.S. citizen and 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
Free of conviction of any crime punishable by imprisonment in a federal penitentiary or a state prison.
Required to pass a physical exam administered by the hiring agency.
Must take and pass a drug screening test approved by the Division of Personnel Services at the time of appointment.
