Role overview
Summary
The Animal Care Technician will provide daily quality animal care for research animals including rats, mice, and birds on the Charles River Campus. Key responsibilities involve animal husbandry tasks such as cage changing, health checks, veterinary monitoring, treatment, and facility maintenance.
The Animal Science Center, part of the Office of Research at Boston University, is dedicated to ensuring the highest standards of animal care, health, and welfare for research animals, in accordance with institutional, local, state, and federal regulations.
This role involves completing daily quality animal care for all housed research animals, including rats, mice, and birds, on the Charles River Campus. Key assignments include:
Animal husbandry tasks such as cage changing, animal health checks, veterinary health monitoring and treatment.
Facility maintenance.
Animal receiving and housing.
Census data collection.
Training will cover standard operating procedures for Biosafety Levels: ASBL-1 and ASBL-2, and Chemical Containment Levels: CCL-1, CCL-2 and CCL3.
The ideal candidate will be able to complete assignments independently and collaboratively, be eager to learn, and communicate effectively via email, text, call, smartphone, and computers. Accurate record keeping and attention to detail are highly desirable skills. This position requires professionalism and courtesy when building working relationships with researchers, veterinary staff, and co-workers.

Required Skills:
High school diploma or GED required.
Previous experience preferred but not required.
This position is 40 hours per week, Tuesday to Saturday.
