Role overview

Summary

This role involves the daily care of an assigned animal collection, including birds, small and medium hoofstock, and other exotic animals at the Little Rock Zoo. The Animal Keeper ensures the health, safety, training, and welfare of these animals and their habitats, adhering to all applicable guidelines, policies, procedures, and AZA standards.

JOB OBJECTIVE: To provide overall daily care of an assigned animal collection, to include a variety of species of birds, small and medium hoofstock, and other exotic animals and their habitats/exhibits at the Little Rock Zoo to ensure the health, safety, training and welfare of assigned animals are in compliance with all applicable guidelines, policies, procedures and standards to include the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) standards.

This position is designated as a safety/security sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol screening.

Minimum Qualifications, Additional Requirements and Supervisory Responsibilities
These knowledge, skills, and abilities are usually, although not always, acquired through completion of an Associate’s Degree in Biology, Life Sciences, Zoology, or a related field and one (1) year of experience working as an animal care professional, to include the care of variety of species of birds, small and medium hoofstock, or other exotic animals in a zoological setting, based on departmental need, or a related area. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a valid Arkansas Class D (Non-Commercial Vehicle) Driver’s License before employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position.

  • Must be available to respond to emergency calls outside of normal working hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
