Role overview
Summary
Join Monkey World's Primate Care Staff to provide expert care for rescued capuchin monkeys and orang-utans. This role involves daily husbandry, rehabilitation, and contributing to the welfare of primates saved from illegal trade and abuse at a globally renowned rescue centre.
About the Role
We are looking for a committed and experienced Primate Care Staff to join the team and support the Section Head and Deputy Section Head on our capuchin and orang-utan section. We have over 60 capuchin monkeys managed in five mixed sexed groups, many rescued from a biomedical laboratory in 2008 and the pet trade. Monkey World is currently home to 14 orang-utans, both Bornean and Sumatran, living in three groups, and hosts the European Orang-utan Crèche for orphaned or abandoned orang-utans. Caring for these intelligent, complex, and individual animals requires knowledge, dedication, and genuine passion.
What We’re Looking For
Minimum 2 years’ experience in primate husbandry, ideally with a range of species.
Strong working knowledge of primate behaviour, health & safety requirements for staff and animals, and the ability to implement them.
Ability to manage priorities.
Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions and be physically fit due to the significant demands involving long periods of standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling etc.
Above all, you will be someone who cares deeply about doing the job properly and understands the responsibility that comes with caring for vulnerable animals.
Why Join Us?
This is more than a job in animal care. It is an opportunity to work alongside experienced primate professionals at a centre with a global reputation for rescue, rehabilitation and welfare. You will have the chance to make a genuine difference, working with incredible animals from energetic capuchins to highly intelligent orang-utans. Be part of important conservation and welfare work, helping to protect vulnerable species and combat primate trafficking, abuse and neglect. We actively encourage continued professional development, with opportunities including Educational and Travel Grants, subject to length of service.
What we offer
Work at one of the world’s leading primate rescue centres receiving primates in need from around the globe as well as from the UK pet trade.
Primate Care Staff starting salary from £23,786.51 to £25,541.02 dependant on ability and experience.
Heavily subsidised staff accommodation available.
Employee Assistance Programme provided.
Holiday entitlement of 5.6 weeks inclusive of public/bank holidays.
Discount in the café and gift shop.
