Summary
This role involves leading an innovative citizen science project to develop a catchment-wide monitoring network for the River Waveney. The officer will coordinate water quality and Riverfly monitoring, recruit and support volunteers, and build relationships with communities and partners to address pollution issues and improve river health.
The River Waveney Trust is seeking an approachable, organised and collaborative Citizen Science Project Officer to lead an innovative catchment-wide citizen science monitoring project across the River Waveney.
Building on a successful pilot in Bungay, the project will work with volunteers, communities, landowners and partner organisations to improve understanding of water quality. Through coordinating water quality and Riverfly monitoring, supporting volunteers and bringing together environmental evidence, the role will help identify pollution issues, inform practical action and contribute to a healthier, more resilient river.
The evidence gathered will also support the Trust’s wider work, including river restoration, natural flood management and other nature-based solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the planning, management, delivery and reporting of the East Suffolk Trust-funded Citizen Science Project, ensuring objectives, milestones, budgets and funding requirements are met.
Develop and deliver a catchment-wide citizen science monitoring programme, expanding on the Bungay pilot.
Recruit, train, support and retain volunteers while maintaining strong health and safety, data quality and volunteer experience standards.
Coordinate water quality and Riverfly monitoring and use findings to improve understanding of water quality and support action on pollution.
Build positive relationships with communities, landowners, businesses, volunteers and project partners.
Organise and facilitate volunteer training, community events, stakeholder workshops and partnership meetings.
Manage project budgets, monitoring, evaluation and reporting, including accurate records and funder claims.
Work with Trust colleagues and external partners to ensure monitoring evidence informs river restoration, natural flood management and other catchment projects.
Promote project activities, learning and outcomes through presentations and digital communications.
Represent the River Waveney Trust at relevant meetings and events.
Support collaborative and joined-up working across the Trust’s wider programmes.
About You
The successful candidate will have experience delivering environmental or community-based projects and working with volunteers and diverse partners. You should be confident working independently, building relationships, coordinating activities and communicating effectively with a wide range of people.
An interest in rivers, water quality, catchment management and using evidence to drive positive environmental change is important. Strong organisational, project management and communication skills are essential.

General Information
Location: Blended home and office working, with office space in Bungay and regular travel across the Waveney Catchment.
Hours: 7.5-hour working day, generally 9am–5pm, with flexible hours available to accommodate personal circumstances.
Annual Leave: 25 days plus bank holidays and your birthday.
Pension: 9% employer contribution.
Driving: Full driving licence and access to a vehicle essential. Own vehicle must be insured for business use. Mileage paid at £0.55 per mile for eligible work travel.
