Summary

The Field Officer – Biologist will support the Gandak Gharial Recovery Project by implementing conservation interventions, ecological monitoring, and habitat protection. This role involves extensive field deployment, data collection and analysis, stakeholder coordination, and community participation to enhance Gharial populations.

Role Purpose
The Field Officer – Biologist will support implementation of the Gandak Gharial Recovery Project through scientifically driven in-situ and ex-situ conservation, ecological monitoring, habitat protection, stakeholder coordination, and community participation. The role involves regular field deployment in riverine landscapes and coordination with government departments, communities, volunteers, and project teams.

Key Responsibilities

Project Planning, Management & Monitoring

  • Support preparation of Project Implementation Plans (PIPs), activity schedules, monitoring frameworks, and field plans.

  • Implement assigned project activities within approved timelines and budgets.

  • Conduct river surveys, ecological assessments, and monitoring to document Gharial abundance, distribution, nesting, habitat use, and threats.

  • Identify, monitor, and support protection of nesting sites and habitats during breeding and hatching seasons.

  • Support habitat management, conservation interventions, community engagement, and ex-situ facility establishment and operationalisation.

  • Monitor field progress, identify operational challenges, and regularly update the Project Head.

Data, MIS & Reporting

  • Collect, collate, validate, analyse, and maintain ecological and project data in prescribed formats and digital databases.

  • Maintain survey records, monitoring datasets, project documentation, and records of primary data collectors.

  • Prepare monthly reports, survey summaries, technical updates, donor reports, presentations, and scientific documentation.

  • Provide field data, photographs, videos, and communication materials for donor reporting and outreach.

  • Contribute to scientific manuscripts, technical reports, knowledge products, and dissemination at workshops, forums, and conferences.

Fund & Resource Management

  • Ensure responsible and compliant utilization of project funds in accordance with approved budgets and organizational procedures.

  • Maintain field expenditure records and supporting documentation.

  • Ensure efficient use, maintenance, inventory, and accountability of field stations, camps, equipment, materials, and organizational assets.

  • Ensure compliance with applicable statutory requirements and organizational policies.

Stakeholder & Community Coordination

  • Liaise with Forest Department officials, government departments, NGOs, academic institutions, Panchayati Raj Institutions, local communities, volunteers, and other stakeholders.

  • Coordinate local volunteer networks and field teams for effective implementation of conservation activities.

  • Support community outreach, awareness campaigns, stakeholder consultations, trainings, workshops, and conservation programmes.

  • Represent the organization professionally and uphold its values during field and stakeholder interactions.

  • Facilitate donor visits, field reviews, and stakeholder engagements as required.

Other Responsibilities

  • Support coordination between field teams, researchers, frontline personnel, volunteers, and HQ.

  • Maintain regular communication with the Project Head and ensure timely submission and sharing of project information.

  • Undertake other project-related responsibilities assigned by the Project Head, Division Head, or organization in the interest of project objectives.
