Role overview
Summary
The Veterinarian provides comprehensive medical and surgical care to the Staten Island Zoo's diverse animal collection, including developing preventive medicine and quarantine programs. This role involves overseeing veterinary technicians, managing infectious disease protocols, and responding to after-hour animal emergencies. The position also includes mentoring post-graduate veterinarians and students, and collaborating with other institutions and specialists.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Veterinarian is integral in providing quality medical and surgical care to the Staten Island Zoo animal collection and serves as a leader within the Animal Department.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide comprehensive medical and surgical care to all collection animals including aquatic invertebrates and fish, reptiles (including venomous), birds, hoof stock, primates and large felids
Develop and enact preventive medicine and quarantine programs, perform routine and illness exams, diagnostics (radiology, parasitology, clinical pathology, among others). Perform necropsies for determination of mortality on all collection specimens
Oversee veterinary technician and protocols of infectious disease management, assist in animal emergency response program, support animal welfare processes, collaborating closely with the General Curator
Evaluate nutrition programs and diet formulations
Manage a comprehensive veterinary care program in alignment with AZA, USDA, USFWS, State and local standards and guidelines
Prepare and assist with the completion of reports and accreditation documents for AZA that relate to veterinary care
Collaborate with other institutions regarding pre-shipment testing of animals being transferred between facilities
Maintaining medical records and other record management
Mentor post-graduate veterinarians, vet student and undergraduate externs as part of the animal hospital student program
Consult with veterinary specialists at tertiary referral hospitals to provide care for collection animals when necessary
Respond to after-hour animal emergencies
Perform other position related duties, as assigned
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
At least three years of full-time veterinary experience with common zoological species or commensurate training and/or experience.
Knowledge of fundamental natural history information and captive management of common zoological species
ACZM certification or eligibility preferred
SKILLS
Above average computer skills. ZIMS familiarity preferred
Ability to maintain a flexible schedule that includes on-call, working weekends, evenings, and holidays during all climatic conditions
Ability to handle high levels of stress while demonstrating excellent interpersonal skills
LICENSING
Must hold a veterinary degree (DVM, VMD, DMV or equivalent); have, or be eligible for, a New York State Veterinary License, USDA accreditation, and a Driver’s License valid in NY
Must understand and comply with federal and NY State DEA regulations and be eligible to hold a DEA registration
HEALTH
Negative tuberculosis test on hire
Up-to-date SARS-COV-2 and Rabies vaccination
Ability to access animal areas and perform physical work including bending, climbing and lifting up to 50 lbs.
Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in all climates
AVAILABILITY
Must work 5 days a week. Flexibility to work on-call or after-hours as caseload requires
