Role overview
Summary
The Gorilla/Small Mammals Supervisor is responsible for the comprehensive care and welfare of mammals, primarily gorillas, primates, and small felids, within Riverbanks’ animal collection. This role involves supervising a team of keepers, designing and maintaining enclosures, collaborating with veterinary staff, and engaging in animal training and public education.
Under general supervision, the Gorilla/Small Mammals Supervisor is responsible for the proper care of mammals in Riverbanks’ animal collection. Works primarily with gorillas, various primates, small felids, and other small mammals. This position reports directly to the Curator of Mammals.
Essential Functions:
Supervises, leads, and monitors the work assigned to a team of area keepers.
Designs, maintains, and repairs animal enclosures. Maintains aesthetically pleasing habitats.
Works with veterinary staff to monitor and treat animal diseases.
Monitors and reports on animal behavior.
Plans and participates in animal training, transport, and medical procedures.
Instruct staff, interns, and volunteers ensuring animal care and welfare are always maintained at the highest standards.
Interacts with guests and provide informal and programmed educational information.
Maintains regular communication across all departments.
Involved in various AZA, conservation, and other professional activities.
Education and Experience:
Associate degree in Biology, Zoology or Wildlife Management; Bachelor’s Degree preferred, and three to five years of experience working directly with both exotic and domestic animals in a zoological setting or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Demonstrates excellent supervisory and communication skills (written and verbal) in all activities. Knowledge and experience with animal training programs and presenting animal programs for public audiences. Experience working directly with gorillas and other primates preferred. Must possess or qualify for a valid SC driver's license.
