Streaming Services Have Become the New Cable

Here is a hot take on modern entertainment: we completely fell for the illusion of choice, and now we are paying more money for a worse experience than we had ten years ago.

Remember when streaming was supposed to save us from cable? The pitch was simple: one cheap subscription, no ads, and everything you wanted in one place. Instead, every media company got greedy, pulled their content to launch their own apps, and fractured the entire internet.

Now, if you want to watch three different shows, you need four different subscriptions. To make it worse, they’ve slowly re-introduced ads, cracked down on account sharing, and started canceling great shows after one season because they didn't hit some arbitrary metric.

We didn't kill cable. We just rebranded it, split the bill into five separate monthly deductions, and agreed to scroll through menus for forty-five minutes every night just to end up re-watching a show from 2005.
